I purchased a 1984 "project" on a whim about a year ago. Despite being a bull in a china shop mechanically, I am slowly but steadily making it into something decent. From day one the main instrument cluster displays have been impossible to view so I replaced the bulbs, cleaned the contacts and re-installed it. When I started the engine, to check the results, the displays lit up like Times Square on New Years Eve. I turned the engine off but when I tried to start it again 5 minutes later it would not turn over. Upon turning the ignition key the gauges illuminate, I hear the fuel pump for a couple of seconds but it does not turn over or even click. The information panel flashes "Security".
What do I do now and where do I look?
Clean your key off.Shoot some contact cleaner in the tumbler to clean it.It is a VATS problem it is not recognizing the key.
There is NO VATS on an 84, but there is a security system. You'll have to do some tesing to determine what is not allowing the starter to work.
Where the hell is CFI

You are correct my mistake. And yes where is CFI the 84 expert?
I'm afraid that CFI-EFI isn't going to be the help he might be. I have had ZERO experience with the theft deterrent system in my '84. I can confirm that the '84 doesn't use the VATS system. From my FSM, I see that the electronic controller is on top of the transmission tunnel. However, I cannot locate the Starter Interrupt Relay. The manual says that they are near one another. I suspect it or the controller may have been damaged or come unplugged when you were messing with the LED IP. Maybe? The Theft Deterrent system is protected by a 10 amp fuse. Could that have been blown? The flashing security light simply means that a door is open, or that the car isn't secure for one reason or another.
When I bought my 84 3 years ago, the guy I bought it from said that they disconnected the security "module", (I think is the name of it) because it was giving them problems. An I have found out that It has been a problem in some cars. On mine in the front underneath the drivers side headlight in the tube of the car I have some wires that were disconnected. I believe these were for that security "module" or whatever it was. If you go onto ecklers site you can look up the part and at least see what it looks like to help identify it.
I hope this is some help to you

That couldn't be of any help at all! Mainly because it is wrong. Both of you guys need to get factory service manuals. There ought to be a law against spouting false information, like that.

RACE ON!!!
If you remove the center bezel, the 10 amp fuse for the security system will be right in front of you. I have the security system schematic if you need it. Email me and I'll forward it to you.

Contrary to popular believe, your 84 project Corvette will one day undoubtedly be worth much more then many C4's.
Spent a little time on the forum and you'll quickly realize all Corvette's eventually will need your undivided attention.
