Default Will I Need A New Chip?

My 89 L98 Vert is getting a top end rebuild. The rebuild will be some head porting, non stock roller rockers, springs, long tube headers, NGK plugs, MSD wires, 23# injectors, and a 160 degree stat.

After this small amout of work (not so small price tag ) is it worth it to get a new chip burnt specifically for this or "should" the car run fine on what I belive is an already stock chip? I've never looked at the chip before to see if it was changed. When I bought the car it already had a flowmaster cat back exhaust on it so I'm not sure if the previous owner changed the chip or not. The mechanic will be looking at that this week as well.

Anyway....

For some backround, the car is a 150,000 mile daily driver. Runs strong except for what apears to be a slight missing at idle and certain highway speeds. New injectors (well, newer) I'm hoping will clear this up.

Thanks in advance for any and all feed back.
Jason

In order to see all your efforts reach their top potential you would most likely appreciate the difference a new chip would make. Especially the injectors and headers. Contact PCMsforless.com and ask their advise.

May as well throw a cam in there to take advantage of the added air flow from your new ported heads.

Strike3,

Thanks for the response, I've been reading a bit more about chips and it does seem like a good route to go. I think my main concern is that I need the car to run good without one, at least for the next few months, since money is a little tight after paying for the top end.

Do you think the old chip should work just fine in the meantime with the changes?

I really wanted to, but I was only able to budget $2200 for whats being done now. The cam would have put me over and pissed off the wife.

I was'nt even ready for this work to be done, but I blew a head gasket two weeks ago, which is the reason for the rebuild now. My real plans were to have the whole engine redone into a 383 in 5 more months and it was only gonna be about $3500, not including the labor to take the engine out and put it back in.

Oh well, some of the best laid plans always get messed up somehow I quess.

You should be OK, but you might run a little rich for a while due to the fuel injectors. Nothing you can't live with, but much of your performance gains will also be on hold.

I understand the budget thing. When it fits though, I would definately make a chip a high priority.

Good luck!
