85 corvette with 3 problems...help
Sounds alone make for inaccuarate assumptions. It is going to be hard for anyone to give an exact diagnosis. As knowledgeable as Pete K and CFI-EFI are you will have to give them more to go on, some visual inspections, and or, how someone else came to those conclusions (based on what methods they took to determine the problem).
"GRINDING" from rear: If you are bringing it to someone they need to show you why, and ask how they have diagnosed a bearing, brakes, rear end etc. (have them show you). The price of parts doing brakes is a lot different than bearing assembly.
"BACK FIRING" under load: problem is it can be many things, some simple some not, car would first need to have all the basics checked, spark (ignition system, wires, cap, rotor including timing), fuel (delivery system, pressure, filter etc), vacuum leaks, a scanner would help. You will need to pinpoint the problem so as not to just change parts and find you have not fixed the problem.
If you choose, buying a manual would help you to at least see the possible diagnosis and methods to resolving problems.
If the mechanic you have taken it to talked about replacing a trans. mount, find a new mechanic. JMO

Edit: I should not have made the post about the trans mount. It was a silly attempt to be funny. Did not mean to add confusion. Sorry.

I do get tired of admittedly, well intentioned people, spouting falsehoods, to people seeking help. If one isn't awfully sure of their facts, either they should state that up front, or keep quiet. Most questions are asked in search of guidance. False information can send someone off on a snipe hunt, wasting time and maybe money, for no good reason. [Down off of soap box]
RACE ON!!!
