I've got an 86 steel head automatic with 130,000 miles, car runs great but had a cold start/run problem for the first couple minutes which I was living with, just had to wait a little while till it warmed up before driving off. Now for the puzzle. I pulled the car into the garage to chase down an intermitent headlight problem, found out it had a bad relay (fixed). So while I have it in the garage I thought I would rotate the tires, clean the battery cables, possitive junction block behind the battery, the grounds on the side of the block to the frame, and the grounds inside drivers left foot well. Put my tools away, go to pull out and it will not stay running for more than a second or two, try to accelurate and it pops in the intake like its lean and runs like crap. Checked all my work and everything looks fine.
I don't think it has run long enough to set a code but I will check. I also thought I need to check the egr valve and fuel pump as they both are original. Its just strange how it happened, I was afraid I cooked the computer messing with the electrical.
Any codes set? It sounds lean. Look for vacuum leaks and check the fuel pressure... before, during, and after starting.
RACE ON!!!
#1-I checked for codes and nothing set in memory.
#2-Fuel pressure looks OK, starts out when I turn the key on at about 45lb then when cranking and the short second that it runs it drops to about 40lb or a little less. It also will blead down slowly as it sits.
#3-I put a hand vacuum pump on the port at the top, right, rear of the EGR and it will not hold any vacuum at all. Am I checking it at the proper location and could this be the problem ?

Egr should hol vacuum!! could be part of the problem.
Guys I want to thank you for the help. I replaced the MAF today with a bran new GM unit I found on ebay shipped to my house for $89.50 (what a deal !!) anway it fixed the starting/running problem now I need to get the EGR replaced but at least its not dead in the water any more.
