Default Service Engine Soon Warning Light

Can anyone recommend a reliable & fair mechanic in the South Palm Beach County FL area who can help me resolve my issue?

I am not at all mechanically inclined & need a second opinion other than the dealer.

thanks!

Hello Bill,

Sounds like a nice ride.

After the repair, did symtoms redevelop. Does the car drive OK now or is the Service Engine light coming on? If the car is working, I'd leave it alone as far a trouble shooting goes. Hard to fix something that is not giving symptoms.

I'd consider looking at filters, fluids etc.

Additionally, make sure to read the owners manual. Many systems require a general understanding. I used to think my hearing got better the harder I drove the vette. Then I read the manual and noted the Bose speed volume feature. Darn.

A good primer for C4's is Probst's "Corvette Fuel Injection". Helps with acronyms, system evolution, however editing is below par. You may try Watson's "Chevrolet Fuel Injection", what I consider an excellent intro to GM fuel injection. These two books really helped me make the jump from carb cars to fuel injection. Amazon.com has these really cheap from 2ndary suppliers. Or, if strolling around Barnes and Noble, they usually have them in automotive.

Enjoy the car.

Pull the code as I discribed earlier, it is dead simple, and report. We can tell nothing from the fact that the light is on without the code to go with it.
Unless you want to be ripped off, stay away from the shops until we can diognose the problem for you, this way you can at least tell the mechanic what he needs to fix on your car and not be at his mercy when he starts changing parts you really do not need.

If you want to be informed you really need to follow some instructions in a methodical fashon and report back more than "SES light back on this AM." There are alot of people on this forum who will walk you through this problem but you must cooperate and feed back relevant information or we are all just gazing into a crystal ball.

Then again ..... it's your car and your cash.

Is the noise is 1 to 5 "pops" from the exhaust as the RPMs drop? Mine does that too. As I understand it, that's normal for a '92. Or at least thats what the service manager at the Chevy dealer told me when I asked him about it.

Default Phil, Jerris

Phil,

Yes, sounds like 1 pop from the exhaust when I take my foot of the accelerator while shifting.

Jerris,

I take it you never received the personal e-mail I sent you. How are you guys making out in your recovery from last year's storm? Been there several times, once at Lacovia.

Hi Bill,
Sorry buy I did not get your PM. I used to manage Lacovia when it was first built and almost accepted a job there again after the storm.
The Island is recovering quite well, however the 141 x2 bedroom condo complex (Ocean Club) I've managed for the past 11 years was one of the worst hit places in the Island with all of the units filling up with 8 ft of seawater and huge concrete buildings completely washed away. It took 1 year to settle the $10.7 million claim and I am now in a 14 month reconstruction phase but will have a new complex when it is done (mucho stress)
Thank you for your concern. If you are down here again look me up.
Best regards
Jerris

Sorry for jumping in here, but I have an ALDL Diacom connector. If I download Datamaster, will my connector work with D/master..? TIA
As for the guy who is replacing O2 sensors....a bit of food for your thought...I was tripping O2 codes in my 87 after an eng. rebuild with a new sensor. Turns out my old pre-cats were junk...I cut them out of the exh.and no more codes....

Jerris, (and anyone else)

The dealer reported both sensors reading low & not exceeding 600mV. Do you still recommend a datamaster scan? If the only codes reported were 64 & 13, I'm not sure where they're getting intermittent stall & signal loss at PCM requiring a PCM replacement. They warned me that the SES light would reappear, which it did. I'm willing to try & pull the codes in response to the latest SES light if I know the best way to reset. I don't want to make the problem any worse than it is. As you probably have determined, I'm a novice at this sort of thing.

You can reset the codes by pulling the Neg terminal off the battery for a min.

If both O2s are reading that low you may need to look elsewhere for the solution.Good news is they are working.Bad news is they should be around 800 and if I remember right your numbers mean it is running rich.Time to check your fuel pressure on the fuel rail with a gauge.Should be ~40psi.It could be as simple as a fuel filter/FP or could be leaky injectors.

If you do not have it it is time to get the FSM for your year from www.helminc.com and trouble shoot it according to the flow chart that will guide you through all the tests.

I am going to guess you are getting the O2 codes again.
A Datamaster scan is always a good thing it will show How the O2s are working and how the injectors are running and wether they are rich or lean. For example if your O2s are lean and your BLMs(injector pulses) are running rich it will point to the injector not being right. There are plenty of guys her that can read your scans for you to help.

As long as you cable has the cig lighter plug in for the 12V source it should work with datamaster. If not ALDLcables.com is where I got mine.
