I finished replacing the EGR Heat Shield on my '86 iron head. After the engine reached normal operating temperature the heat shield started to smoke. Is this the shield breaking (burning) in or is it a defective shield? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What did you replace it with? You are talking about the tin foil looking wrap correct. If you are, then you will need to replace it with something else because it should not smoke. I tried to replace it with the tin foil like engine heat tape you buy in rolls. bad mistake it doesn't work ..had to go get the replacement covering from the dealership. didn't smoke and works fine.
I replaced it with a genuine GM replacement heat shield that I ordered through Ecklers. It has also discolored somewhat from the heat. The engine runs fine and there are no strange noises??
me personally, would call them up and tell them what happened. they should replace it for you. If your old one wasn't smoking then it makes me feel something may be wrong with the shield

Re: Need Help, EGR Heat Shield!!!! (CG77VETTE)
Sounds like you just happened to get one that's defective. See if Eckler's will replace it. It doesn't hurt to try. I've gotten many defective items replaced just by being polite and firm with store managers. Although different stores have different policies.
When I replaced mine it smoked the first time it got hot. Turned out to be some of the paper glue from where I tore off the label. After that its been fine.
