Help. Code 36 for 1989 L98.
Got a code 36 today and my Haynes does not decipher the code. Anyone know what this code affects? Car was driven a short distance in traffic. A/C was on and temp was in the 230+ range. Outside temp was 91 with 100% humidity (rain). The code cleared after battery disc. and did not return on same drive under same conditions listed above. All replies greatly appreciated.
89ragtop, Code 36 means that the ECM did not detect the burn-off cycle on the MAF after turning the engine off. The MAF has a very fine wire that is used to measure air flow into the engine. That wire is hot when in use and, from time to time, gets contaminants stuck to it. In order to help keep the wire clean, the ECM runs a burn-off cycle after you turn the engine off. The ECM watches the burn-off circuit to see if it really happened. If not.... code 36 next time engine starts. If the burn-off occurs next time you shutdown engine, you won't get the code..... Not a terribly bad code, but repeated occurances mean problems with burn-off relay or harness connections or maybe even ECM. hope this helps.
Yes, the code 36 is a MAF sensor issue. Here is what you should do first: Replace both MAF sensor relays asap. They are located behind the battary , on the firewall. The cost is about $10 each and you can purchase them from your local auto parts store.
Did your car hesitate and sputter when you got the code 36 ??

Re: Help. Code 36 for 1989 L98. (Vic'89)
Vic'89,
There was no sputter or stall when it activated. However while troubleshooting car was hard to start and idled like crap, barely got to 400RPM. After I cleared the code it started hard and ran rough until the computer caught up. It's running good now but has not been driven. I have a new MAF burn off relay. Waiting for the rain to stop so I can back it out of the garage and have room to work it. Don't want to leave the C5 in the rain.
Just make sure to replace both relays at the same time. They are right next to each other on the firewall. They are cheap enough that both should be done at the same time.
