I know this topic has been adressed but I have a problem with heat soak with my starter on my 90. I had the precats replaced not too long ago and now whenever it gets hot out my car won't start. I've waited the 5 - 10 minutes in case it was the VATS, but still no go. It will start when it cools down. I can pop start if I am parked on a hill. Does the VATS system kill the fuel delivery? If so then it is not the VATS. Like I said before it will start once it cools down. Can I use a mini-starter? If so where can I get one and is there a certain one I need (tooth count? I do I know this?). Does the heat shield work? This is getting to be embarrasing. The 100 degree days here are doing a number. Any help would be appreciated.
VATS only controls if the starter solenoid gets power if the pellet is the correct resistance. I would install a heat shield to reduce heat soak on your starter and see if that helps. They aren't expensive.
You may have a bad solenoid. The precats may not be position correctly. Heat sheilds that were on the old precats (if they had them) may not be on the new ones. I would check out precats first since this problem started after the precats were replaced.
I am haveing the same problem you are haveing right now, replaced starter, newpositive cable, gutted cats have top shield on, and still the same problem, heat soak, I have a friend who works for chevrolet and they said they don't make a heat shield for my 89 roadster but go to the local speed shop and get a starter wrap to deflect the heat and it would probably help, im going to by pass the vats system next and seeif that is the problem, then get the starter wrap also, in arizona it really gets hot here and next summer will be here soon.
Summit sells two types of heat shields. Metal one runs $19.99 for either polished or burnished finish. Metalized blanket goes for $25.99. You may want to consider a soleniid relocation kit. Cured the problem I was having on a hedder equiped F-Body . About $25.00 for the kit which can be installed in two hours or so. Does not make a permenant change in wiring so you can go back to original if desired.
