the engine is in the shop to get rebuilt and i need to know what cam to get? I have a 2400 stall and getting some head work done or just some new heads. I like the lobey sound of cams and im looking for some streetable performance. Will the 280 have me loose too much vaccum though?
Need more info. I had the Comp 280 in my L-82 man did it sound mean. I think the old specs were 280 dur 496 lift. The vacuum was not good and it loped. I thought later the 268 might have been a beter choice for a DD. But I alos thought the 296 would have given even more power. So what do you want to do and what do you want?
Car wont run worth a crap with a 280, especially with TPI (Im assuming). Try one of the XE series cams from comp designed for fuel injection. A 270 or 280 magnum series cam will turn the car into a dog. Look for a lobe separation of around 112 or so. Have you seen their 262? Lots of guys here use it and love the power it makes. Rumpity rump is overrated when it comes to F.I. unless the car is highly modified.
well, im not quite familiar with cams. I love the sound a nice cam makes, but i am aware with my TPI it would be difficult. My car is about almost a daily driver. I like HP though. Actually im eliminating most of my smog stuff along with most of my vaccum lines if that makes a diff.
The problem is (aside from tuning) the TPI intake runs out of breath about the time these cams get in the meat of their powerband. Are you going to keep the TPI, maybe upgrade to a Miniram? I like lopey cams too, but if it were me get a conservative cam (210 to 220ish @050 on a 112 lobe center and the best cylinder head you can get your hands on (I like the 180's for a street car). It may have a tame idle but will haul *** from the word go and have good part throttle response.

True.
If you don't have emissions try a 219 cam and a Miniram. I have that combo, it is easy to work on and makes very good power. I have a stall (2700) and the wrong (3.07) gears, but from what I remember, last fall, the car was real fun to drive. I need gears to optimize at the track but street wise the car is great.
There is a forum member who has driven my car and I'd welcome his input as to what he thinks about it. Brian Glenbul are you there?

Yes, to all the above! I have very similar to this and there is a lot to be said for a good idle and throttle response in a car that is street driven.
I have a set-up that could handle a bit more cam than what's in it (212 i 226e @50 zz9), but going to a zz409 (226e 226 in ), or others in that 220-230 range are probably better suited in a 383-396. This would net me probably 20 chp., but in a 350/355 vacuum might get low, and would take away street manners. The max. I thought to be good in mine even with the heads I have, would be the hot cam type of numbers (thinking divability, not max. power). I think lopey is cool but driven more freqently would become a pain. JMO
