Default Rotors...Stock or Slotted

Is there any reason that I would have to put slotted rotors on my 86 or will the standard ones work ok? The car is a daily driver ( although it is run hard ) with the occasional drag night. The rotors are about $35 for standard and $100 for slotted.

Thanks
Steve

You should be fine with plain old rotors. Slotted and drilled look better, but generaly don't perform better.

I went with plain old rotors from NAPA nad PFCz pads. My understanding is that in most cases, the drilled and slotted rotors are primarily a cosmetic thing.

I agree however there are inexpensive sets of slotted/drilled rotors on ebay all the time. I think they are about $300 for a set. So for very little more you get the better looking ones!

You can get slotted/drilled for less then $100 each on ebay. I think a set of 4 is under $300.

Slotted rotors make a considerable amount of noise and vibration during braking, especially when they warm up.

Spend your money elsewhere.

You will see ZERO performance advantage by changing to those rotors.

If you insist on slotted rotors, get ac delco Durastop ones... they're $65/rear $78/front on rockauto.com

Look over in the Track/Autocross section. Those guys need the best braking action and they seem to prefer the ones they get from NAPA, I think... Use'm up and throw on a set of new ones. So unless you really want the Bling thing save your money.

I just paid $149 - $189 w/shpg for all 4 drilled/slotted on ebay, they look sweet let's hope they stop as good as the stock.

Definitely go stock. If you want more braking performance switch pads and change the fluid.

You can't turn drilled rotors either...

I've got the drilled/slotted. Look great as long as they don't get wet because they seem to rust up easy. Garage kept though so that isn't a problem. They don't seem to stop any better and if you just want performance then I would stick with stock. If you have nice see through rims then I'd go with the drilled/slotted due to the looks. They've held up well, I put them on over 2 years ago and they still look and work like new.

I was sold on these slotted and drilled rotors until I checked this forum.
It appears that the only ligitimate reason to install them is for the looks.
In theory they will dissapate heat easier but this should only be a concern if you autocross your vette. However there seems to be a drawback with this as if you use them enough to require the extra cooling they appear top crack much easier than the stock ones.
For the time being I will stick with the stock ones as they offer more surface area and do not overheat under normal driving conditions.
Just my thoughts on the subject.

So how come drilled rotors look better, but drilled tires don't?

Both are a performance disadvantage. I'd like to think that anything that benefits performance looks good, and everything else looks tacky.

If you are driving your stock street vette hard the stock (non-drilled, non-slotted) rotors will crack.

By all means stay away from drilled rotors, they will crack faster than stock rotors.

We run slotted rotors on our autocross '89 big brake car. When I ran stock rotors I would usually go through 2 sets of front rotors per year and at least 3 sets of PFC pads.

I switch to slotted rotors 3 years ago, I just inspected them on Friday, there are still no cracks.

I now go through 1 set of pads per year and it looks like I wil get at least 4 years out of the slotted rotors.

BTW, the slotted rotors were cheaper then stock rotors.
