Default ECM part #

Is there a standard part # for an 85 ECM? My buddy picked up an L98 from the bone yard and wants to make sure he has the correct ECM.

In 85 the TPI cars had only one ECM which is the 1227870. If this engine is going into something other than a C4 he can use a 1227165 which was used from 86 up to 89. Or he can go with a speed density setup that uses a 1227730 or a 1227727 which is the weather proof box.

BTW, did he get the '85 harness with the engine? If so he is set up for MAF and that would be the way to go. If the engine he got is a '85 to '89 it's set up for MAF and there is probably no reason to swap to speed density. If it's a '90 - '91 engine it's Speed Density and there is really no reason to swap to a MAF setup.

Either would be fine. It depends on which engine he got.

I just spoke to my buddy. He said the ECM # in the one that came with the engine is 1226870. Is this a 305 ecm or are they all the same?

A quick google search revealed this:

http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:...ient=firefox-a

Scroll down to "Electronic Control Module(ECM)" and from the list it looks like the ECU is the same, and is only for the 1985. From everything I've heard the 1985 is it's own animal. That ECU will only work in a 1985 harness unless modifications to the wiring are made.

Another factor (which I don't know what the answer is) is that the ECU is the same from 305 to 350, but the chip might be different depending on which engine the car received. Someone with more knowledge should be able to answer this.

hope this helps,

Dirtnapp, did he get the harness with the engine?

If not there are several companies that offer engine harnesses for TPI engines that are used in swaps. It's fairly common in street rods etc.
