I just bought some rainbow profi vanadium components (2 way) for my 91 c4. Has anyone ever mounted 6.5"s in the front that would have pics of how they did it? I have heard on here that you can cut the holes larger to fit them, but I want to see an example before I start cutting. Also, where should the tweeters and crossovers be mounted? I found a great deal on these $800 speakers, so I bought them without doing as much research as I should have on installation. I may just go to an audio shop, but I still would like some ideas on how to mount for best quality.
Also, anybody know where to get the adapter to fit the cd player (eclipse cd8445) into the dash other than just letting an audio shop screw me out of alot of money?
as usual, if im retarded and this is a repost or i left something out, just let me know.
Thanks guys,
CJ
You can't fit 6.5's in the door. If it was possible I would have done it. My 5.25's had trouble with clearance(Boston Pro's), maybe if you get one of those surface mount kick panel type things you could do something, because the real problem is depth, the window will hit a 6.5, so you have to build it out somehow. Way to much work for virtually no audible difference. Anything below like 120-100 khz goes to the sub anyway and thats the only benefit to a 6.5 setup, and it's a very minimal difference even at that.

What he said.
I went with Infinity Reference 5.25" components because of the depth. Stock bose covers even fit over them... although the bose covers give you zero extra room for speaker protrusion. I put the tweeters under the dash panels and cut holes in them, then glued the fabric back on.
Infinity reference speakers are junk btw. I'll be looking out for some better components that fit in the doors.
If you go with new speaker grills, some better components will probably fit... but I haven't seen any square speaker grills. Rounds ones won't cover the square hole unless they're huge.
I fit my 5.25 Boston Pro Series behind the bose grills, but I kept the tweeters down low as well, if you seperate them too much you get imaging problems.
Its not too bad for me because I located the rear tweeters at the base of the sail panel, right by your shoulder where it turns to carpet, no pics though.

anybody have the measurements for the useable depth of the front speaker compartment on the '91 c4? I really dont feel like walking 200 yards to the parking deck and unconvering my car in the freezing cold just to measure. Also, anybody have suggestions on how to expand the depth of the compartment? Ill be in a bad mood if I cant figure out how to use the component set I just bought (though i got a damn good deal).

You're in luck, I've been cruising around with that big square hole in my door for a few months now.
I just measured 4" from the carpet to the window. The stock cover gives you an additional zero inches for speaker excursion. In fact, the mouting tabs of the speaker have to be offset into the door a bit to keep it from hitting the grill. You could also use small standoffs on the grill for an extra 1/4" or so. That gives you about 3.5" of total speaker height. Damn, that's a lot more room than I remember... I guess I should dump the stock plastic enclosures that I modified! Infinity perfect 6.5s might fit in there afterall...
It would be wise to glue some padding to the back of the speaker magnet in case the window tries to bounce off of it during hard cornering.
(even smarter would be to use one of those rubber boots that protects the speaker from water)
