Broke it clean in two and it looks like the other side was going to break soon. It was on the passenger side in my 85 C4. GM doesn't carry them any more, so I had to put in a couple of used ones. I've beefed up the rest of the driveline, but I think this will remain the weakest link. Are there any after-market heavy duty or billet splines available?
toms differential has the outer and inner axle's that are cold stabilized.. I picked up all of them a couple of weeks back and will be installing when i get the rear this weekend...
beware-- they are not cheap----but with your turbo they would probably be worth it...
Thanks, Bill.
I called Tom's today and he did not have a replacement piece that was stronger, but would like to make one if there were enough people that wanted it. I wonder if others here need a stronger one. I'm going to try Tom's cold stabilized spindle but, I'll wait until I break these new ones first.
I was worried about the turbo's placement also. It glows red-hot after beating on it for a while, but it seems to be fine.
I am not following "I called Tom's today and he did not have a replacement piece that was stronger, but would like to make one if there were enough people that wanted it. It reads to me that he did not have a stronger peice, but you bought the stronger peice. I am lost. Are you refering to the half shafts? I know he does not have any stronger replacements for those.
I run the treated spindles from Tom's and it is a stronger peice. Think about getting his cold forged Spicer u-joints too depending on what brand you are currently using.
Tom's felt the "cold stabilized" spindle that he could offer was not the right answer for the car and that it was possible I could break that one also. The stronger one he was referring to was a new machined piece that he would need to make from scratch, but the cost was prohibitive for just a couple of sets.
To get the car back on the road, I put in used stock spindles for the time being but if (when) I snap these ones, I try the "cold stabilized" pieces even though they are not the ultimate answer.
I already have Spicer U-joints (the big brutes work well also) and heavy-duty half shafts.
