Default Another HP Question

Good day, I am just new to the forum and have another beat to death HP question. Here are my mods for my 86 L98 pace car:

Edelbrock heads, edelbrock manifold, edelbrock cam, breathless cold air intake, 55mm throttle body, hi po wires and plugs, cat back flowmasters, fuel pressure regulator set at 45psi, 160 therostat.

Just a rough idea for crank and rwhp is all I'm looking for.

A rough estimate would be headers is 15-35, intake 10-15 55 mm no more than ten but not even that much flows add about 15 thermostat and plugs/wires just make it run better i dont think theres really a horsepower increase. Just runs colder, and better spark. Better throttle response im sure. Stock the L98 came with 230 so your probably running about 280 or so. Torque prolly hasnt increased that much with those mods but the L98 has alot of torque stock so i wouldnt worry about it to much.

I also have an 86' (alum heads on mine) and I think your heads and cam will put you above 280FWHP. My 86' has TPIS LT Headers, intake, runners, AFPR, and they ported the plenum for me. My car turned 230HP and 327LB/FT on the dyno, and I am running the stock heads and cam. Assuming a 17% loss for the auto tranny (2.59 gears in my car, not that it makes a difference), and I should be seeing about 275FWHP and 390FWTQ.

You mentioned the PSI you are running from your AFPR. I would recommend that when you dyno the car you have them measure the Air/Fuel, and you will be able to dail in the AFPR and get the most out of your motor. As for your power output, I would put you somewhere between 290-330FWHP depending on how well the heads and cam work with the stock bottom end, the TPI intake style and each other.

Get to the dyno and let us know what you found!

Here is a link to the dyno graph if you are interested:

all that money on mods and not a single $80 dyno run? Your tune could be way off killing your power and you wouldn't know...

I hope I'm not missing something, but I have always used FWHP to mean Front Wheel Horsepower.

FW = Front Wheel
FW = FlyWheel

I should probably have used CHP = Crank Horse Power.

This is probably a very realistic estimate, even though it seems conservative to some.
Once put on a dyno, mods seldom give all the hp we were hoping for.

Thanks for all of your input fellas. The reason for no dyno, is because I am still in the middle of Afganistan and the parts havent even been put on yet, so when I get home next month I'll be sure to get it dynoed and post the results.

What are your cam specs, .050 duration and lift, head cfm and compression ratio, are you using the edelbrock base and with what runner system (ie big tubes, SR or siamesed. Are you going to run headers too? Post that info and you will get very close hp numbers.

What's it like in Afganistan, crappy? Do they hate Americans?

See my sig, I have vortec heads and the same intake system you are talking about, with hooker headers and flowmaster catback. I had a bad tune at the time and was running really lean but I made 230 horse power and 280 tq at the wheels. Since then I have ported my plenum (plus the gaskets where blocking some air flow... damn mechanic.), got a tune by alvin and my cat converter (free flow but problably clogged) actually came loose and I have notice a huge increase in power. Once I get this tranny rebuilt with a new stall converter, which is gonna happen in a couple weeks hopfully, Ill go right to the dyno. I let you know what kinda power im making.
