So I have a 1996 LT4 with OBDII. I heard that you dont ever get a sniffer test with an OBDII car because they run the OBDII computer diagnostic instead...is that true? If so does that mean I could cut the cats off completely and just use an O2 Simulator and get away with it?
No, there is a visual inspection on cats here in GA, now you could gut the cats and get away with it, not sure why you would want to go to that much trouble.
If it looks like the cats are there and there are no codes and it (the ECM) is in a ready state it will pass.

True, unless your state also performs a visual inspection (most do) in addition to the OBD II check. Assuming that to be the case, your car will fail when it's discovered it doesn't have cats.
It depends on the emissions requirements. If your local ozone numbers start to creap up, a visual will be coming soon... trust me.
I ask, why gut the cats? they are not robbing you of much power, 5hp or so... Infact, the act of gutting ROBS even more power! The hollow chamber left behind is a real bad idea for exhaust flow...

Really? I have had many cars, over many years thru the Ga emissions and have never seen anyone do a visual. Did not even know they were supposed to.
And what make you think it is OBD II?My understanding is OBD II came in on the 96 model with the crank trigger int the timing cover although the plug was changed earlier.Confusing huh?
This makes no sense. He clearly states his car is a '96 LT4. All '96 Vettes were OBD II compliant/certified per federal law.
FWIW, it's not a crank trigger which implies it's used for engine operation. It's a crankshaft position sensor and it's sole purpose in life is to allow the PCM to determine engine misfire for OBD II. The engine runs fine without it.
It really depends on the area. In NC a visual is a part of the safety and a OBD2 plug in meets the emmissions requirements.. The inspections here will never be just a plug in check.. afterall, a purpose of the inspection is to get cars with bad suspensions, exhaust leaks, etc. .. off the road before someone gets hurt.
Now, just 30 miles south of me in SC there is no inspection at all.. no safety and no emmissions.. Crazy ain't it?
