Hi.I want to install com cams 07-305-8 cam with 0.51 lift. What do you think,my stock springs, retainers & locks are o kay with this cam?Original lift is 0.459.Thank you.
no.. that is too much lift for the stock springs.. get a set of comp 986 springs and good retainers and locks and have a reputable shop install them on the heads and give them the specs of the cam.. they will likely set the install height of the better springs so you have room to grow in cam lift. the springs will also assist in letting the engine rev to its potential by keeping the valves from floating at higher RPM's.
WARNING!!!!!!!! if you install that cam with stock springs you will drop a valve and destroy your engine.. that is past the point of coil bind!
Can I use stock retainers & locks with these springs or I need to change it?If yes,can you give me part numbers? One more thing. What about stock timing set?Is it o kay with this cam?
in my opinion and I amy be biased as I have broken the stock timing set and it was a new unit replaced with the cam, I like to run a meziere electric waterpump and then get a good double roller timing set.. for a L98 style roller block motor. then no worries.. I don't think that the stock timing set likes the extra pressure better springs put on it.
the springs you will want are the comp 986 springs, simply determine if you want to use chromoly retainers or titanium.. i prefer titanium as they allow room for growth in cam size and help dramatically by shaving weight from the moving valvetrain assembly.
call comp and they can set you up with a complete list of part numbers then call summit, jegs or your favorite forum sponser and price out who has the best deal.. make sure the builder installs them according to the spec card on the valve springs... a set of locators or spring seat cups should be used to keep the valve from marring the aluminum cylinder head and to keep the spring from dancing.
