Just had my opti, water pump, plug wires and spark plugs replaced. I had the same problem you had. Now the car runs great but it's having a hard time starting. Mechanic found a little leakage out of the weep hole at the bottom of the water pump. Looks like it dripped onto the opti. Why didn't GM recall that system is beyond me!!!!!!!!
You can click on my name and check out the posts I've had about the opti. Look for the topics CREATED by Jimi Lane, then look under the "archived files" instead of "recent". I had a "GREAT" time trying to figure out this opti thing...
I just replaced the opti/water pump in my 93. The water pump was leaking, and the car missed very occasionally over 5,000 RPM. No SES lights. Turns out the opti was about gone as well. These things like to hang on forever berfore rolling over dead.
I had a local shop convert mine to the 95 set up. Like stated in the previous posts he had to drill the cam for the longer pin on the cam, and 95 timing cover, and timing gear if I remember correctly. You have to T into a vacuum line for the new opti. All the parts came out $10 cheaper than just a 93 opti and water pump. Labor was 1.5 more hrs. but I wanted the new opti.
What's the name of that local shop and their phone number? Have you used American Corvette in Powder springs for anything? If its doragatory, e-mail me via my profile--don't want you getting kicked off the forum :(
Andymi, thanks for the offer, but the waterpump is different and I need these parts in a BIG hurry. I ordered them both from Jeff Kopp (along with some other gaskets and seals) and had them shipped 2nd-Day delivery. The parts should be here by Wednesday and in the shop on Thursday.
For anyone who is interested, the parts list for a '94 is as follows:
