Well today I went for a little cruise up highway 1. While comming home blasting the stereo I hear a snapping/break noise over the music. I stop and check the outside because it sounded like it hit my car.
I then checked under the hood at a gas station and everything looked normal, then I noticed a little play in the shifter and I couldnt put in in 1st. Also when I put it in park I could still move the car
So its probably the Shifter Control Cable that probably snapped... dunno. Has this happened to anyone before. Looking for an estimate for a fix. i think its like $90.00 US for a new cable, it might have just misaligned, or i could be way off, not sure exactly.
Would it be safe to drive the 30Miles to school tomarow with this problem?
hope somone can help me, thnx
:EDIT: 1990 A4 coupe, 46xxxMiles.

I'd look under the car at the linkage attachment on the side of the transmission pan. You could have hit something that tweeked the linkage. You want to make sure the manual valve that's in the transmission is in the correct spot when the shifter is in a given position. You don't want to be notched in D on the shifter and the manual valve offset in the valve body. There are detent positions on the lever that comes out of the trans. There are also detent positions on the shifter. These detents are matched and maintained by the shifter cable. I wouldn't drive it until I knew everything was ok, from what you described that you have looseness and can't get it into 1st it seems something has gone awry. You might be doing damage by driving it even though it seems ok.
