There are 14 chemicals listed. I don't think brake fluid comes close to this composition, so GM did some engineering to come up with the wear and noise suppression properties.

Damn, sorry to hear that there are people still having troubles. So far my latest replacement *knock on wood* has been good for about the last year.

Just in case though I did some R and R on the other two I have and carry brake fluid in my tool bag. Nothing quite like having back-up.

Gm replacement here, for 1 year and no problems. I did notice while bleeding the new one, that the fluid became very dark after running through the slave. I though maybe there was some sort of oil inside the slave, so I continued to bleed fluid through until the stream became clear fresh fluid.

Mike, what kind of R and R? Do you know where to find rebuild parts?

Sorry guys, no parts list available. It was an experiment in welding, really.

My second replacement slave had a crack at the weld (which GM would not warranty because I installed it myself; they claimed I over torqued it.) so I had a buddy that works at a CNC shop bust it apart and we cleaned the inside. After doing that we rehoned the cylinder and welded it back up and painted it. The lock ring and boot were in perfect shape so I just put it back together.

My other "replacement" slave is the original, which when failed only had a torn boot. I just cleaned this one up real good inside and out and all it needs now is a boot.

Before installing slave #3 I took a real close look at it and found that the lock ring was not seated right on this one either so I took it apart cleaned and scuffed the inside of the cylinder where it is painted and then reseated the lock ring and boot. So far so good.

That right there is inexcusable. Sorry Chevy lovers, but it is. Have they heard of QUALITY CONTROL? It is easy to check tolerances on a high percentage of the parts going out and ensure that they are in spec. It is GM's place to check the quality of the parts going out. In Statistical Process Control, you actually measure and look for trends in the measurments to see if your Manufacturing Process is going out of control (need to change a tool bit!) BEFORE you made 1 part that is actually out of spec.

I got a bad brand new opti and a bad brand new waterpump from GM and it would seem that they are letting QUALITY go to __ll because these cars are old and they are not making profit on them.

I said that too once, now I have to replace my ZF 6 speeds at $1600, I went through 4 slaves, the last one I did it 2 days ago and it was junk, I did the slave, the hose and master, I reverse bled with a Mity-Vac shooter, as soon as I pushed the pedal to break the retainer, it blew the seal instead, the piston rod never came out, the fluid went between the bore wall and the piston and the rod never even moved, if I had tried to start the car in gear, even with the clutch to the floor, I would have hit the wall.
Those of you that say the slave lasted one year, or 8 months, you don't really know that, you know that is when you found it to be leaking but it may have been leaking from day one, the GM ones are junk and it's not only a recent batch, I have 2 ZR1 and replaced my first slave 5 years ago and after only a few hundred miles I found it to be leaking but it could have been leaking for a long time, they have been junk for a long time, the Raysbestos looks like it comes from the same manufacturer and that's the problem, there is alternatives out there but we don't know who actually make them, the only one that I found to be different than the GM part is PBR, the housing is cast iron and can be bought for $71 including shipping, I will try one of them next time, every others I bet they all come from the same supplier, I emailed Raysbestos to ask if they make them or if they come from and outside source and they never replied.
I now have 3 bad slaves in 2 different cars and less than a thousand miles and one that failed before I even start the car.

Al

My question on this line of topic is should I just wait until the slave gives up, or should I go ahead and replace as preventative maintenance? The car has 154k on it. I'm afraid of changing out a working one for one that may fail in 3-4k. These failure rates are alarming.
If it doesn't leak leave it alone, my new one failed upon installation and I put the old one back in.

PBR is the manufacturer of the J55 calipers I just bought if that helps. Now I'm curious too.

Edit

It's an Australian company, and I've sent an email inquiring about the slaves. Their web site doesn't mention any parts other than brakes.

PBR Brakes

I'm on my 3rd. This one was a GM, new hose and master also. I think the slave rusts and pits if my car sits as it does. I am thinking about blocking the clutch pedal down so the piston will be out and fluid will fill the cylinder when not in use.

BTW, I have not had any leaks yet and it releases fine. My others were from a jobber and mid america.
