Take off the drivers side rear wheel. Remove the inner wheel well. And you will see the antenna bolted in place with a bracket. disconnect that. You will also have to follow the line going into the rear comparment in the car and disconnect that also. Should be under the carpet. Not hard at all.

sounds about right. This was one of my first projects on my 91. If I remember correctly I installed an aftermarket antenna for about $50. It also helps if you have skinny arms.
John: Are you replacing the entire unit or just the ribbon/mast assembly? Either way, you should remove the power unit. The ribbon/mast is not expensive and this solves most problems. I can scan this page from my 89 Helms manual and email to you if you wish.

My antenna goes up fine but won't go down all the way.
The last small segment stays up.
Is there a simple cure for this or do I have to
buy/install new mast?
Where do I buy a kit or mast.
I have a '93 vert.
Thanks,
Craig

GM has a replacement mast. Nylon ribbon with finial end of antenna
Try just replacing the mast first. If your motor runs when you turn your radio on and off, you know the motor is still good. If if you have a broken section of the old mast ribbon lodged inside your motor, you'll have to remove the entire unit for servicing.
