I want to start manipulating my tune, just little stuff on my 93. I have Craig Moates chip burner and reader software, TTS datamaster and a cable to hook up and read chips. Now, Tuner Cat, do I just dowload the program and purchase the license?
WHat things do I need to ensure I get everything do I can read the engine while running, then be able to change things then burn to a new chip install it and go.
So to reiterate.
Hook up laptop and read with TTS
Use Tuner Cat to "tune"
Reburn
Voila, done
Look at the Ostrich on Craig Moates site. www.moates.net It is realtime emulator to modify the tune on the fly. Supposedly it's battery backup power is good for 75 years so you could leave it plugged in. I haven't used it myself but I haveen thinking about it.
Yes, you are on the right track. Get Tuner Cat and also get the $DA2 definition file. You should start by doing some data scans with Data Master and then looking through them. Get to know how your car runs. It takes awhile of looking through scans to know what looks right and what doesn't. If you have questions, ask and I'll help anyway I can. Good luck...
Thanks Guys, Just want to make sure I am on the right path. Just want to start out slow, and correct and not rush into it. I am going to buy tuner cat and the def file this next paycheck.
If it is shoot for 128 Block learns and try to weed out the consistant knock counts and you should be good to go.
Nope, I just want to see whats going on with tuning. The VE is a bit overboard for me. I am just going to look at whats available to tune within the chip, and play with little things first, like fan temps etc etc, then as I learn more graduate to idle tuning then driving tuning ,then WOT. Its a learning curve for me.
The track closes down hear in a month, so I will have plenty of time to play with the tune.
I will keep your tune in a file incase I mess something up, then I will just work at it. Hopefully I will buy my own wideband to drive and play with.
it seems overwhelming at first. i been tuning now about 2 years. i would not be too quick to start changing things. datalog, take notes, datalog, take notes, etc. as far as fan on-off temps that is realatively easy. it is in constants. that may be the first change you make. should be relatively easy to verify results. the greatest satistfaction for me was to take a significantly modded engine, recognize it is running terrible, and get it drivable. the highlight was successin giving it proper choke function to allow it to run on startup on cold morning. after i bought my WB i would see the choke "turn off" way too soon. a tweek here and there and i could verify A/F at start up and see it time out just at right second to allow a smooth transition to CL and engine coming up on coolant temp.

I figure I have enough time to start learning, so when I get our of the service, i may be able to tune friends cars for whatever they throw at me.
