Well, it appears my motor either jumped the timing belt or threw a rod. She won't crank over. Engine stops dead as if a piston is smacking into a valve. So I need opinions from you guys.
I am deciding of either rebuilding this engine or simply buying a new crated engine from GM. The reason I'm asking is that if I buy a crated engine, I know its brand new and comes with a warranty.
Also, since I live in Hollywood, CA would anyone know of a "good & reliable" engine rebuilder close to me.
Bummed,
Rick

gee... have you pulled any plugs to see if a cylinder is full of something? this happened to me and I found the FPR had busted, flooding some cylinders with gas.

Your good. That's exactly what my mechanic suggested I do when I spoke to him this morning. I'll do that even if I have to remove all of the plugs and try to crank it by hand. I'll cross my fingers on this one.
Thanks for repsonding,
Rick

If not fuel locked, check to see if any bolts have backed out of the flywheel and are jamming against the bellhousing.

There is one thing of which I can assure you. Your engine definitely did not 'jump' a timing belt! Good luck, there are many of us here willing to offer advice and help if we can. You've gotten some great tips already.

Same thing happened to me .Chevy said the motor was shot.
I had a warranty then and they came out and checked the motor ,All that was wrong was the FPR was bad and the motor would not turn over.Timing belt I gota see that on a vett.
Of course they killed my starter, had to replace that. They had the car for 2 mths.
Chevy also said I needed a flywheel.

Definitely you should have the car diagnosed, first, to see if the problem is cheaper to fix then a new motor. If this is a daily driver, the crate motor has added appeal in that you can get one right away and not have to wait for a machine shop.

You still need a good shop to do the install. For machine work, open the yellow pages and go visit some shops. Talk to the people and get a sense for the customer service they can provide. And if they specialize in 383, then of course they are going to want to sell you that.
