Default Broken Steering Column Part ID

I've torn down my tilt steering column to repair the slop and found a broken part loose in the housing.

Here is the part on the bench:

Here is How I found the part, you can sort of make it out in the bottom of the housing out of focus. This also shows the turn signal switch that I think this part may belong to:

So, do I need to order a new turn signal switch?

Don't worry, I'll post a full pictorial "how to" on repairing the tilt column once I've gotten everything back together. It's really been pretty easy so far, and I'm down to this:

Thanks,

Jason

This looks like the indent spring for the indicator switch.

Did you have a slightly loose indicator switch that did not click when you turned it on?

I think it goes between the two black plastic ends of the indicator switch after they go past the steering shaft and the wheel rides against the stop that looks orange in your picture.

The orange spot is grease. I think you are probably right. Back in the day I had a warranty repair for a clicking in the steering column and I think it's likely that they put the grease in and broke the spring.

So I need to order a new turn signal switch right?

Thanks for your help,

Jason

Unfortunately I dont think that spring comes with a new switch, check with the parts supplier first. A junkyard may be your only source.

I have never had my steering column apart and am not familiar with them. I decided to look in my parts book to see if I could find anything. The picture "on the bench" looks most like the "Lever, Strg Col Shoe Rel". For 1984 through 1989 (as far as my book goes) they are all the same: part number 7841865. To check it out, or to confirm that this is really what you are looking for, it is in group# 6.514. Good luck, and...

I need to do this too. Been wondering whether to tackle it myself or not. I'm looking forward to your final report.

Did you fix the slop? I hav had my steering column replaced because of this, and was told there are bushings that go bad. They are made of soft alumunum.

It's still apart until I can resolve this issue. There is a tilt column repair kit that includes new pivot pins. That appeared to be where some of my slop was, but the new pins measure the same as the old so I don't know if they'll fix it. The pins aren't really soft, the steering column is.

I don't have a parts book. Where could I get one? Where does that part go?

I think I see the broken part here on the eckler's part picture.

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...dept%5Fid=1168

Chris May also confirmed that this part came with the switch assembly.

There is no regular source for parts books. As a matter of fact there haven't even been any parts books for years. The illustration in my parts book, which is a poor, line drawing, looked most like your bench picture, than anything else I saw. I gave the description from the parts book and the group number as an aid to you and whatever dealer you might end up working with. I don't see what you pictured in the opening post, in the picture from Ecklers. If you've found what you needed, great.
