Hey guys, I'm doing a A4 to ZF swap in my 94. Besides that, the key is stuck in the ignition. I want to replace the lock cylinder. Can I order on for a manual car even though mine was originally an auto or can I order one for a 6spd????
More importantly, how do you remove the lock cyl from the column? My column is out of the car. I can't figure out how to get the plastic off of the column.
If it is a 94 you have to remove the air bag.The screws for that are on the back side.
The lock cyl has a tork screw in it ,you should be able to see it after you remove the little plastic piece with the 2 little brass fingers on it.
Or yours also has a silver small vertical bar that you push in with a small screw driver to release the lock cylendar.

The key is stuck because the Park/Lock control cable that was connected to your auto shifter is not in the park position. It was the cables that mounts to the front of the shifter. Push the cable in to the park position, and the key should come out.
Find the park position on the cable and secure it to that position. You should be good to go then.
Not sure about the lock cylinder, but the Auto, and standard have different steering column.

The key was stuck before the column was removed...and that park cable was working. I'll give that a try today...thanks guys. I'll just order the cyl for the auto and rig that switch.

Having more problems.....how do you get the retaining ring off to get behind that plate????
If you do not have a proper puller tool you can remove it with the help of a friend. Push down with your thumbs against the spring that is underneath until you expose the metal ring that fits into a grove in the steering shaft. This is what holds it in place.
While ring is exposed, hane your friend take an awl or icepick and pry the ring out of its grove and slide it up and off the steering shaft.
Plate can now be removed by sliding it up off the shaft.
