Rev counter over-reading

Rev counter over-reading
1990 Auto.
Strange fault. Rev counter appears to be over-reading by at least 1000rpm. Engine is not revving high at all but tickover is "apparently 1500rpm" and its not. I guess its maybe 500.
Cruising is at 3000, not 2000 which is more likely.
When you give some kick down, revs go way off the redline and beyond, but it seems fine.
Why would the rev counter over read like this? What can i do to remedy it? It doesnt really matter, just a bit of an annoying glitch.
