Default Sorry, but more brake booster problems

It seems like everybody's booster decided to take a dump at the same time. Using my Helm's and the excellent post by fjm59vette a while back, I am trying to replace mine right now. I've gotten everything removed from under the dash except disconnecting the brake pedal from the booster rod. The manual says to remove the "clevis pin". What the heck is a clevis pin and how do I remove it? Also, under the hood, how do I move the ASR module? I removed the bolts from the wheelwell, and all that's happening is the wheel well is coming loose. Please be kind. My extended warranty ran out and now I'm having to learn how to wrench myself.

In my experience with 85-90 C4's, you don't remove the clevis pin itself...but the split pin that goes INTO the clevis pin. The c. pin is a fixture of the br. pedal. It is what the rod from the booster attaches to on the pedal. If the split pin is removed, then you can slide the rod off of the clevis pin and take it out of the car...
I have no experience with ASR's, so cannot comment on that...
Hope this helps...

Still not sure what a clevis pin is, but are you talking about a cotter pin that need removing?

Default Brake Booster

I just replaced mine,in an 84,and the pin they are talking about is a "cotter key" looking pin that has a half circle in it that snaps over the rod when you push it in. That's factory, some replace it with a standard cotter pin. Be careful it dosen't drop behind the carpet. It should have a washer also thats stops the pin from rubbing. Remove the pin with a pair of needle nose, pull hard, and it will slip off.Slid out the retaining clevis, and the rod [from the booster]will be free.there are 2 bolts that hold the bracket to the inside firewall, remove them, the one on the left is the hardest, requires a universal Knuckle in your extension.let us know how your doing.............

The clevis pin to you and I is a fancy cotter pin. Maybe your car is different than mine - but I didn't take off any ASR or bolts in the wheel well.

Just take of the brake fluid reservoir from the front of the booster, then move it out of the way.
Ten take off the bolts holding it to the firewall.

Next - go inside the car - the work inside is 10 X easier if you just remove the drivers seat. Reach underneath the seat cushion - along the front edge - flip up the wire clip - then pull out the cushion. That gives you acess to the 4 bolts that hold the seat to the frame - just remove em - unplug the seat - and pull it out. takes less than 5 minutes - and saves you at least an hour of agony!

Then useing a rachet with a wobbler extension you take of the nuts holding the boster to the firewall and detach the brake petal - now you can remove the booster from the engine compartment.

If you have been doing diligent searches you hopefully have the metal replacement booster from hotrod USA - 130 bucks delivered in 2 days - adjusted correctly - a great product! anyway reinstall and get back on the road. A search will reveal several threads where myself and others have demistified and made this an easy repair - it's no big deal - took me less than an hour - and I barely know which end of a wrench to use. The keys:
1. remove the seat
2. wobbler extensions!

Thanks for the tips. I'll resume work on it after work and let you know how it goes.

Default Brake Booster

I have noticed that I have more pedal on my 84,when I removed the filter! it was new,put it in when I did my brakes,so I just ran a straight shot from the manifold to the booster, seems ok now......Good Luck
