If I lower just the rear on an 84 z51, do I need to get an alignment?

Second, do I have to remove the rear wheels, I have heard both ways, I really dont want to remove the wheels.

yes, you will need to get it aligned. You don't have to remove the wheel but it makes like easier.

Remove the wheels to get an alignment or replace the bolts?

Totally agreed, the bolts can easily be replaced without removing the wheels. Alignment would be recommended.

Thanks for the info.

To Sami85L98...yours looks awesome, do you have Z51? Did you do the front or did it lower when you drop the rear? I have heard Z51 cars sit higher?

Lowering should increase negative camber a bit at the rear, and will most likely increase the toe in.

Check the toe with a stick or something that you can run under the car, and turn in the tie rods evenly as required.

ez way to check toe

cut two pieces of 1 x 8 ( really 3/4 x 7-1/2) board same lenght as tire diameter...lay the boards long side on ground , leaning squarely against tire at about 45*...now you can easily measure both ends, as long as you are reasonably gentle the boards won't move

If you lower it, how much camber increase per inch? Guestimate?

If you're only lowering an inch or so, probably nothing to worry about. You'll gain a tad of negative camber but that's a good thing on these cars. Chalk line your tires and get an accurate before and after measurement of toe, but that's not likely to change enough to matter either. Still, I'd be more concerned with any possible changes there than with the camber.

I was told, that anytime you mess with the suspension on these cars you should always get a 4wheel alignment afterwards.

It depends on what you're doing and if you know what you're doing. It's also possible to do a precise four wheel alignment at home, with no special equipment, if you want to take the time.

"I have heard Z51 cars sit higher?"

Other way round. My factory stock Z51 is so low at the front can hardly get fingers between guard and wheel whereas most stock Vettes have a couple of inches.

I'd love to do my own alignment as I autox and am alway tweaking stuff & like to try different aligns.

Do you have a link to a do it yourself align. place?

TIA

I used to have a link for that saved but I think it's one of many that AOL decided I didn't need anymore. Anyhow, I have a caster and camber gauge which makes it even easier. They're not that much. If you have one, it's real easy to put things back where they were before you took them apart. The toe is just a matter of accurate measuring.

How do you get under to make the adjustments? Without the align ramp/pit it's hard, no?
