Default How can I be sure timing mark is correct. Engine is running. (lt4 hotcam)

Please help me determine if I've made an error installing my hotcam.

As you may know, I have been installing an lt4 in my lt1 a4 car, and I was concerned that I didn't line up the timing gears properly because of all the slack in the chain...(another story)

Now, my question is.. since it started and appears to run fine.. without all the accessories/alternator/torque converter etc etc....is there anyway to tell if I may have gotten a tooth off? I only ran it for about 60 seconds...if that because there's no coolant or wp. Would it still run if I was off? Idle sounded a little iffy.. I reved it a little and it cleaned up and sounded like it wanted to take off, but does that mean it's okay? It has the hot cam in it now.
I know it doesnt have the converter hooked up and the exhaust is open, but it revved up quickly and sounded mean as ...well mean for what I'm used to.

thanks..
sam

Has the computer been reprogrammed at all? If not that may be why the idle sounded a bit "iffy"...but from what you described I'd say that it sounds like the install went thought okay. Get everything hooked up and see how she goes!

Thanks zix....
No, the computer is still the lt1 a4 computer, and I still have the stock lt1 fuel rail/injectors since that was easiest as i didnt have the tool to take off the fittings.

I'm too excited to work on it right now, so i decided to clean out the garage, put my tools back in order....reorganize and hit it again this evening.

should be on the road tomorrow at least temporarily, until I get a tune, some tires and some .....money :-).

Thanks for all the help!

Do a search on Nathan and you wil see that just because the car starts and runs Ok does not indicate the cam was installed correctly. He had his in and running but it was just down on power.

i would still take the timing cover off and make sure they are aligned.

Ive had a similiar situation, on another car, it was dohc, with a timing belt, and whenever you tensionsed the timing belt, it would move both cam gears a little. I was supposed aling the marks offset so when the tensioner moves them, they would be dead on , once tensioned.

Long story short, i ingnored it and did it the easy way, the marks were off a little, car ran and idled ok, but had no power horrible and horrible econmy for a 4cyl. Within one month i redid it the right way, and took the extra step to degree the cams in with adjustable cam gears(only option on this type of motor). The car feel 100 percent better.
