Default Question for Engine Builders/Gurus

1990 383, auto

I am having trouble getting my freshly rebuilt engine to start. I have been turning it over quite a bit for trouble shooting purposes. My question is this:

Is it harmful to the piston rings (or anything else for that matter) to be turning it over so much without it actually running? According to the cluster guage I\'ve got good oil pressure.

Sorry if this seems like a moron question, just want to make sure I\'m not messing something up while trying to figure out something else.

Cranking with good oil pressure shouldn't harm anything. I know its after the fact but did you pre oil the engine to lube everything before trying to start it?

Why isn't it starting? Define "turning it over"? If there is fuel going into the cylinders excessively because no starting is happening, gas can accululate in the oil which can make the oil less effective.

What are you troubleshooting. If your not trying to make the car start, I would pull the injector fuses or disconnect the clips from the injectors so there is no fuel going into the motor.

I\'ve got another post in C4 Tech that is about the no starting. Yes I need the fuel hooked up, its a new engine I am trying to get started for the first time basically and can only seem to get it to turn over. Thanks though, I did know about the gas accumulating in the oil thing, it will be changed just to be on the safe side before the engine is run for a long period of time.
