I am wondering about how it's best to keep the intake matched up. Can I RTV the intake base gasket on, let it dry, then place the runners? Or does the RTV have to still be wet? I don't want the gasket to get moved out of place, ya know? Any tips? Thank you!
Since your talking "runners" I assume this is an L98. The only place your going to use RTV is as the front and rear gaskets for the intake manifold itself. Otherwise just some hi-tac to hold the manifold gaskets inplace (to the heads) while your doing the install. You have to place the intake manifold on in one motion and in the correct alignment. If you try to move it around too much after it is on you risk loosing the seal of the RTV. Pretty simple, once you do it you'll see. Once it's on bolt it down and torque. The runners can go on at any time after that. No RTV here, just the runner gaskets and again some hi-tac if your worried about the gaskets slipping during the install. It's all pretty simple after you do it the first time. Recently did mine.
The intake base to heads is heavy and sets in place ok but the runners and plenum move around a lot. For example the bolt holes of the gasket are much bigger then the bolts, so the gasket can sag and move all around on the bolts, making it not line up to well. I will use a dab of RTV to hold it together then.
That's what the Permatex "Super High Tack" is for, it basically glues the gaskets in place so you can assemble it without them falling out. It is possible however to put it all together without any extra glue. Good luck.
