hi guys. my tach filter has gone bad and the dealer said it is discontinued. so does anyone know where i can get one or can i just run without and wire around it?86 auto coupe
My tach filter was bad as well. CFI-EFI informed me that he runs without one in a previous discussion about this same topic a few months ago. If you've been here for any length of time you know he is very knowlegable and helpfull. If he says it runs well without it that is good enough for me. The tach wire plugs directly into the distributor with the section of wire containing the filter removed. I have not started my engine yet with the tach filter removed so I can't speak from personal experience.
Please post your results if you choose to bypass the filter on your car.
o.k. gang i bypassed the tach filter and everything looks o.k. so far. the tach is working again and it is not doing anything irregular.thanks fr the help guys
I haven't tried running my engine with my tach filter disconnected, but I'll keep that info in mind incase I ever have a filter problem.
If you JUST have to have the filter, I've seen one advertised for sale in one of the catalogs. Forgot which one specifically, but it was one of the Vette catalogs; Mid America, Corvette Central, Ecklers, etc.

I did run without a filter in my 84, but considered it a bit risky for my instrument panel.
When I measured one, it contains an inductor and one or more capacitors. So It may protect your cluster from voltage spikes. So if you feel unconfortable, I may be able to measure the filter and tell you how to make it from low cost RS materials.
Tell me if it is worth doing, I feel happy to help if one thinks it eases his mind.
Maybe I've just been lucky. I really don't know much about electronics. A wire broke off of my filter, I bypassed it, and it has been trouble free for years. I don't know anything about this guy. I've had the link for years, but never used it. The fact that the site comes up is encouraging. Check HERE if you want to look into a new tach filter.
when mine went kaput i had no choice but to go to a salvage yard. the 90/91 tach filters are without replacement. i got a good used one, wrapped it in heat tape, installed it and voila, my tach relaxed and went back to normal after going literally haywire for 2 months.
I have one off my 89 that you can have for $25 delivered.
When I put in my new 383 I lost the original and purchased a used
one from contemporary corvette for $50 PLUS SH.I just recently found
my original in the basment and now I have 2.
I just got my 383 running this past weekend, thanks to CFI and others no less, and part of the rebuild required a used engine harness to replace the original. The used harness had already had the filter removed so I went with it like it was and although I haven't run it for very long period of time yet, it seems to operate fine. I've got a '90 model.
