hey guys.. yet another piece of the 383 puzzle.. will an inline pump suffice or is an intank more appropriate? i've heard the walboro 255 fits directly where the OEM pump is, but i'm not sure about dropping the fuel tank.. tho i suppose now would be the time to do it while the car is apart..
if i go with an inline pump, where is best to mount it and how do you go about getting it "inline"? i.e. cut and insert where? do inline pumps typically come with necessary wiring and plumbing?
On my '85 I do not need to drop the tank to change the pump... I assume that is true of yours as well. The procedure is quite straight-forward. In-tank seems to be the location of choice for most applications... pushing is easier than pulling... Good luck.
In tank pump is definitaly the way to go on your set up. You do not have to drop the tank. Just remove the gas filler door and you will see exactly how to do it. Takes less than an hour to put a pump in. Very simple.
Put an in-tank Accel in my 84 TPI conversion, no problems except I maybe should have increased the wire size, however, the fuel pump circuit fuse is rated at high enough for the pump.
I just bought a Walbro GSS340 255lph in tank pump off of one of the Camaro board vendors doing a special on them. I did find one place cheaper but wanted to make sure I had all the right parts so I used the other vendor.
thanks guys! shortly after posting originally i made a run out to my car and pulled the service manual.. that is pretty slick how easy it is to get the fuel sender unit and pump out! i'm definitely going intank per your suggestions..
chris, sending you an email now.. that's the pump i want i think!
Call Precision Turbo in Indiana. I bought a Walbro 255ltr in-tank from them about a month ago. They had them on sale for $92, there was an ad in GM High Tech Performance magazine.
I had to call, the pump did not show up on the web site at the $92 price but here's the link anyway. http://www.precisionte.com
I don't think it will take more than 30 mins to change the pump from start to finish.
nick, was that the 307 or 340 pump? are both pumps a direct fit? will probably just do the 340 since it supports more HP and who knows how long i'll be satisfied with just a N/A 383
thanks for the help guys, much appreciated!

also, meant to ask if you have to upgrade the fuel pressure regulator too? will it handle 80psi?
sorry, don't know too much about fuel delivery systems, just assuming if the pump is rated at 255lph @ 80psi then the fuel pressure regulator should be the same??? dunno - need direction!
also, if two pumps are rated both at 255lph, why does one support 750hp vs 600hp just because it's 80psi instead of 70psi? my confused line of thinking is that 255lph is 255lph, same volume, same hp support levels?
-mikey *enrolling in fuel systems class this fall*
I got the 307 pump, that was the one they had on sale for $92.
The 307 is a direct fit. Not sure about the 340.
The pump's flow is rated @70psi. In other words it is capable of flowing 255ltr/hr @70psi or 80 depending on which one you're looking at.
Your pressure regulator is what regulates the PSI into your fuel rails. Actually without a regulator your fuel pressure would be pretty high.
You will never need to run 70 or 80 PSI in your car. I would leave the pressure set at whatever it is right now. You may need to get an adjustable regulator for when you start tuning the car since you might need to adjust it a few PSI. You may want to ask some other LT1 guys with 383's what they needed to do.
thanks for the ls1.com tip.. turns out it is mike licht who set the deal up thru ramchargers.. (mike used to have his own shop, modern musclecar..)
i called the mail order number and since i wanted to have it overnighted they kindly made the suggestion that he could arrange to have it at their local store by 1pm tomorrow!!! $89 plus tax for me since i'm in michigan.. outstanding! this was for the 340M pump btw, supposedly the best single pump setup you can get.. will support 550rwhp! (gives me a buffer on my 383 in case i decide to spray it next year) :jester
I remember Modern Musclecar as well as Mike Licht very well. He is a great guy, I bought my PI Vigilante for my camaro from him a few years ago. He went out of his way to get me the converter in time (very little time) for when my new trans was ready to go in the car.
On another occasion I called to order a new fuel sock for a Walbro pump I had, which I didn't even buy from them. They sent me the sock for free, including shipping.
Great people to deal with.
