So, bout that ZF6
In intitial build costs, rebuild costs, driveline hardening, and upgraded cooling, I can account for $5000 in this project. Hopefully, I could obtain some money from the tranny, after all, it's still got LOTS of high zoot stuff for an interested party, a cool torque converter, and a nicely sorted cooler+ temp gauge.
zfdoc has a seriously cool, bullitproof 800-odd-hp ZF6. The price to install that would be, roughly, $4500
The Corvette wrecking yard (contemporarycorvette.com) has a 'kit' to install a 50k mile ZF6 at $2000. I suspect a new clutch, flexplate, and consumables would be required. ($500-$800, I'm sure)
So, with a torque motor, that makes 375 hp and 480 ft-lbs at the crank, and a hardened driveline with a 3.54 rearend (yeah, I know, a D44 wouldn't be a bad idea, but I'm trying to recoup some of the $5000 the auto cost, $1500 of which was driveline hardening.) how much more than a stock setup would I need?
The motor was built to take a 225-250 shot of NOS, but, honestly, I'm not interested in anything more than the car makes right now. As it is, well...was, it was faster than NHRA liked for a ragtop. Further, if I leave it alone, the D36 lives.
Bill B at ZFDoc can build you a nicely blueprinted ZF for a very good price, and he stands firmly behind his work. I highly doubt you would need his 800 some-odd-HP build-up.
Give Bill a call, he's a great guy and will give you all the information that you need, even if that means sending your business somewhere else if that's the best option for you. Tell him Jay sent you over (I live down the road from Bill and he's a good friend of mine)
