Default 1996 LT1 Difficult to Start

I have a 1996 LT1 Automatic that has gotten progressively more difficult to start. The Engine cranks over strong with a new battery that was replaced before the starting problem. It cranks for about 3 to 5 seconds and then starts as if it was flooded. I can then smell gas immediately after start up. This problem has developed slowly and progessively over the past month or more. Once started, the car will then run fine in town and on the highway, but seems to have a small rough Idle when at stop lights.

Additionally, When highway driving for maybe 15 min at a constant speed... everything is fine, but when I let off the gas to exit and then re-apply the gas... there's no horse power at all... like she's going to stall. Let off the gas again and re-apply the gas and the power then kicks in.

Any one else have this problem before, or can I get some trouble shooting tips. By the way, there are no warning light on the control panel.

I was thinking that maybe the fuel pump might be going out, or the fuel pressure regulator, but want to consult with you guys first.

Sounds like fuel pump but check the pressure. It might show ok but if you can tape the fp gauge to the windshield to see what it's doing as you drive. Good Luck, Robert

Fuel pressure regulator may have failed. Pull off the vacuum line and see if you have some gas in it. That's an indication of diaphram failure.

If it's flooding the engine before startup I would check the injectors.

Sounds like its time to buy a fuel pressure guage. If you smell fuel, you have a leak or clogged fuel filter.

They could be leaking. Sounds like you need to go through the whole system. Start with the fuel pressure, if low, replace the fuel filter. If still low - you're looking at a new pump. (on the positive side - it's the easiest pump to replace on any GM fuel injected vehicle)

If the fuel pressure is good, look at the injectors. You can pull them out with a little effort (the whole side at a time) and check to see if they leak. Hold the rail above the manifold, turn the ignition on - but don't start the engine - this will prime the fuel line up to pressure. Check for drips.

Good luck.

I agree with previous posts. Check fuel pressure, injectors and all filters. Fuel pumps sounds suspect...... I just changed mine with good results. Not hard and less than $100
