Default 1 7/8 Headers???

my 2149s are in poor shape so I'm thinking about new headers in the future. Anyone make a 1 7/8 set of headers for the C4? Anyone running them with a big inch SBC? I know there's a debate with the new Z06 guys whether it's worth it going bigger. What are your thoughts?

With your inches and set-up, I'd look at the stepped headers. ! 3/4" to 1 7/8" primaries. These can be worth the investment for engines such as yours.

Oh well, you know what they say. You wanna play, you gotta pay. I ceased to worry about how much I have in my car a long time ago. I'm probably approaching three times it's value but I don't care. I don't plan on selling it in my lifetime. If I want it and can afford it, I buy it.

Hey Dave,

I've been looking for a couple of years, the only ones I've found are Stahl & EM. Stahl makes them in a couple of different tube sizes & stepped plus lots of options. I picked up a set of used, coated 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 stepped with split 3" collectors recently and put them on for this year. Still haven't gotten to the track but the car is out of the chassis shop so thats finished. Lots left to do on the car but that NC thing is eating up my weekends right now, try to catch me some evening & we'll chat.

Good luck,
Dave

Stahl will make you anything you want if you've got the jack. Like the popular country song says, "It won't take much time, it'll just take money!"

If you have Stahl make your headers make sure they move the pipe on number 1 out of the way of #3 spark plug.the plug boot is dead center of the header tube and for $1500.00 I don't think they are worth it.
They call them 1 7/8 .
Yes coated and all the crap ,bolted to Brodax 11x heads.Carb is 1090 Barry Grant that was a good investment,14.8 to 1 compression
and 434 CI 685 lift.Blaha Blaha,and so on.
I had the engine a little lean when I first fired it up so the headers feel like they have furr on them instead of a smoth coating.

I have a set of 2" headers with 3 1/2" exhaust for sale. Swaine coated headers alone I will sell for $500.00 shipped with the adapter plates. Entire system with custom made mufflers $1300.00 shipped. The x-pipe section is also Swaine coated.

They are custom made headers. T paid $1800.00 to have them made then about $400.00 for shipping and coating. I don't know what you have but you could check with the cam maker and see what they would recommend. I am doing 2 inch again on my 427 NA small block. I just need new headers because of the raised exhaust ports on the Pro-Action heads.

Dave,

What you have is plent good. Corky saw only a fractional grain <.1sec stepping up from 1 5/8 inch.

know LOTS of guys running 1.75 headers on these large CI motors. If it were much of any gain at all, we would have them already. I checked around on this quite a bit and turned up nothing that convinced me.

If it makes you feel any better dad is only running 2" on his 555ci motor, and it out MPHs nearly every other 555 I have seen even with 2.5" heads on them. And that thing is sucking more air than our motors will EVER dream of inhaling.

Spend the $$ on getting the car to hook off the line and utilize what you already have.

Talk to Trevor or Merle at Exotic Muscle, their number is 480 967 4222. Those headers have a lot of different options available to them so when you talk to them make sure you have them tell you exactly how they are configured when they ship because there are quite a few things that can be changed/upgraded if you choose

Zix,
Thanks for the prompt, in-depth response.

I wonder what would be appropriate from the new headers on back. I currently run hogged out TPIS LTs with the TPIS Big Mouth (Flowmaster) system. I am looking at replacing the full system. It would be nice to go to a 5" oval section in the middle with dual 3.5" to each muffler. The car is an '87 that is street driven and has been to 9.73 at mid 140s in the 1/4 (prior to being permanantly outlawed from HRP), but has subsequently gone 6.16 in the 1/8th at HMP. Thoughts on exhaust selections?

As a matter of fact, I have seen the exact exhaust system you described. It was made for a friends car here by McCabe (sp?). It was made of 1 7/8" stepped to 2" headers, merge collectors to a 5"+ oval exhaust enter to a center muffler, then a single 5" outlet out of the center of the rear of the car.

I would give Trevor at Exotic Muscle a call, he is the one that designed the exhaust system with McCabe and he really knows his stuff. He'll be able to give you some good ideas, and a lot more specifics on the exhaust than I can. I think you'll be looking for something very similar to this design.

I wish I had pictures of it but I nevet got the chance to take any before everything was installed on the car.

Zix,
Thanks for the additional info. I think everything that you have described is correct except the single discharge in the center of the rear. Due to the Greenwood tunnel package that I run, I will keep the twin discharges. I have included my sig so that you can see the reason for not wanting the ecenter discharge.

I will call Merle on Monday. Thanks again for the help.

No problem, but you are going to want to talk to Trevor, not Merle about this one. Trevor will know exactly what you are looking for. He'll be in tomorrow for sure (not sure if anyone will be in today!)
