never mind I got it, for those who dont know its easy. Pry the button up with a flat head screwdriver and when you look down where the button was, there is a snap ring, remove that with the snap ring removal plyers and bam its off.

Thanks for the info. I've been thinking of getting one of the carbon fiber ones.

Thanks, I am in the process of pulling the cover from my console ('87 vert) and didn't have a clue how to remove the **** until I read your post!

That's all there is to it?? You just pop up the plastic button and there's a snap ring to undo then the know comes off?? I havn't gone out to the car yet to try that but I'm wanting to be a new dust boot on. Any other hints or advise?

Another way of removing the button from the gear **** is to get a paper clip, bend it straight and with pliers bend a right angle on one end about 1/4 inch long. Slide the clip in between the button and inner edge of ****.turn the clip so the right angle end is pointing inwards and pull up.This is safer than possibly damaging the edge of the button if using a srewdriver.
Carefull when removing the center consol cover. The plastic is quite brittle and you may have to bend and jiggle it a bit after all the screws are removed. The same goes for putting it back. Fitting a new gear boot is self explanatory when you look at the way it's fixed in. Did all this stuff to my Vette last year.Pretty easy job,but remember not to crack the plastic consol. Good luck from a U.K.Vette owner.

I've seen a few cracked console mounting holes on the glove box edge. Seems these are often missed when removing the console.
