im crusing down the highway and i look down and my temp gauges is at pegged at 299  i immediatley pulled over and popped the hood and the rad cap had popped off, and it spit out all its coolant..so i let it cool down then it wouldnt crank..battery was fine, all accesories worked, so i was scared the rings had seized..i walked 1/2 hour to a gas station and called for a ride..when i got back to the car it started up so i think the starter was just too hot. when my ride showed up i filled it full of water and drove it to the gas station to get some coolant..all they had was a leaking bottle in a garbage bag, so i got it for 2 bucks..drove the car home, it seems to be ok..no smoke from the tail pipes so i think i didnt blow a head gasket..im gonna pull the plugs later and check..but my blinkers dont work now i guess they got too wet, and thing else i should check?

Re: over heated my engine (nsimmons)
No big BOOM when the radiator cap blew off? If not, then it must have been loose which would explain the boil-over.
I'm sorry, but the reason the car would not crank was probably not the starter, but rather it was seized from the heat. Not much you can do, but change the oil, flush the coolant and check compression on each cylinder. You have done damage but it's hard to tell how much. Bearings were probably over 400*, tranny fluid would also overheat if auto and there was enough time. Heads can warp, cylinders can score, bearings can gall, seals can be ruined, gaskets can leak. Take it easy and change all fluids you may get some life out of it.
Sorry to hear of the problem, it's too bad. Wish you much luck.
no boom i think the cap just came loose
i just changed the oil and the valve cover gaskets yesterday, and the tranny fluid last week. i checked all the fluids, they all look ok still
it wasnt high for long..maybe 2-3 minutes, i had just gotten on the freeway and the temp was fine before..i also dont think the water got that hot, i think the sensor just wasnt exposed to the water..as soon as some water circulated around the temp dropped down to 240 immediatley...anyway i'll see how it is on the way to work tommorow
This may sound odd, but you may have sucked in something which blocked your radiator such as a plastic bag. When you left to get help the bag may have dropped and blew away. Check the air intake area just below the front bumper to see if there is any debris in the area. Then do what DT suggested, start with a new thermostat and radiator cap. Also check the radiator hoses, one may have collapsed.
i put on a new cap, the old one didnt look very good, im pretty sure it just came loose..also i noticed my oil temp was 195 which wasnt much higher than normal..although i do think one of the valve covers is leaking again!!
ditto for me.....i have actually seen 299* on mine too....but the car was off (ran her out of water from the bottom weep hole on the H2O pump) fortunately i have been worried about temps prior to that and kept a VERY close eye on the temp guage. shut her down at 265* and she heated to the MAX.......but she still runs strong!
change that thermostat too.....and i hear to drill a 1/8" hole in it to keep coolant flowing at all temps? this sounds like a great idea but i forgot to do it on my 160* stat.......hope it doesn't ever get stuck closed!
good luck with her, now you have to treat her with extra special care.....or she won't take care of you :smash:
Just remember the analog gauge is attached to the sensor in your engine. The digital readout is from the sensor to your waterpump. I recently overheated my engine and the digital gauge showed 235 to 240 but the analog gauge was over 260. Of the two readings the analog is the more important.
