One of my employees just bought a 84. Car seems in overall decent shape, but the transmission died on the way home this evening.
The question: We know it's a 700-R4, but will any GM 700 R4 fit or do we need a Corvette specific trans to go in it? I seem to remember the tailshaft housing being a different length. What about the output shaft? He needs to fix this car on the cheap, so any advice is much appreciated
TIA, Ed
The output shaft and housing are specific to the corvette. A vette case cannot be used on a pass car. But a pass car case can be used in a vette. There are many internal differences. It would take a full page to list these small changes.
If I can be of help, let me know.
Also be aware that most 84's contained the smaller 27 spline torque converter and input drum. Because of this, most people do actually upgrade to a later model core and build that one instead. Quite likely, your trans (employee's) has been swapped out. Before doing anything, I would suggest reading and posting the code stamped on the pass side of the case, just above the pan rail. This code will give all relative info. model year, julien date etc. Post it and I will break it down for you.
