Default Rear diff to batwing seal renew

The previous owner of my '85 had a shop swap out the D44 that was in the car with a D36 from his '88. I have no way of knowing if the shop renewed the gasket between the rear diff/batwing when they installed the D36. I have not driven the car yet (it is an intensive winter project). I will have the car on the lift in the next week or so and I have not even checked to see if there is fluid in the rear. I am assuming the rear end is dry and if so now would be the time to seal the rear diff.

So, what is the easiest way to seal the rear diff? Does the diff have to come out of the car?

thanks,

No gasket was used. Gm used black rtv in the early years and orange rtv on the later years. Unit must come out to properly seal it up.

If they swapped in a d36, they swapped the entire unit in, and probably didn't even crack the case. The batwing is not interchangeable.

Central - I didn't even think of that but now that I read it you're absolutley right!! That must be what they did!

I'll give it a shot as is. If it doesn't leak (doesn't look like it was leaking) than I'm good to go.

thanks for the info!

So why would they swap OUT a D44 for a D36? That doesnt make much sense to me.

Whatever rear needs sealer,DO buy the "right stuff "sealant made by permatex for the rear end seal. The regular RTV wont hold up very long.
Most napa, car quest and parts stores carry this stuff.I used it and will never go back to regular RTV.This stuff will last a very very long time.

I got some of that Permatex stuff on my hand about a week ago and its still there and I wash my hands several times a day. A new definition of long lasting stuff.

I person I bought the car from owns a 1988 with stock drivetrain. He bought the 1985 because it had a really beefed up engine and drivetrain (it was a drag car). He stripped the drivetrain out of the 1985 and swappped it into his 1988. He was left with a gutted 1985 shell and the stock drivetrain out of his 1988. The shop that was doing the work swapped the rear ends. I bought the 1985 car and the 1988 engine and drivetrain. That is how the 1985 ended up with a D36.

Last year we had a Permatex service rep at the shop one day. He told me that The Right Stuff does indeed have a service life of several times longer than their best silicone. Their best silicone BTW, is the Ultra Gray. It contains ceramic particles making it the strongest and also holds up the best to gear oil. He said gear oil was the most reactive type of oil to any sealer, hence if it holds up best to it, it's the best for any type of oil. Ultra Black was their next most durable sealer, he said. Be forewarned though, he told me that anything put together with The Right Stuff may quite possibly have to have the seal cut through with a razor blade to get it apart later.

It does stick rather well.

Luckily the diff has pry points on it. I had to really work at it to seperate it. Sticks very well, none of it peeled cleanly off the aluminum.

I'm looking forward to pulling my 4spd apart with the right stuff on it, that was hard enough when it was factory rtv.

Yes, it is among the worst. Still marketed because it is popular and cheap to produce. He was very candid.
