Default Help... Code 13 all of a sudden.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know its the O2 sensor. My car threw this code in the middle of traffic and kinda idled crappier than usual, not to mention using more gas. Could an O2 sensor go bad all of a sudden or could it be deep in the harness? Exhaust manifold is still too hot to remove the sensor. Car idles really low at 400 rpms and feels like stalling out. What could have possibly caused this? The light now comes on about 1 minute after start up with the idle super low. :

A code 13 does not mean you need a new O2 sensor, just that the O2 reading is outside the preset limits set in the computer. This is usually a too rich or too lean condition and is probably the cause of the low RPM.
Do some troubleshooting and find out what caused the code 13 to set and fix that problem and it is likely you will not need to replace the O2 sensor.

Scan it. If the sensor is dead, you will see it on the screen.

Datamaster is a great tool for looking at what an O2 is doing.

You're on a roll tonight! I've never had an O2 sensor throw a code, even when they were totally fried. You should run okay, just really lousy gas mileage. Look elsewhere, young Korbet.

I just went to autozone today and got a new one for $29. Cool, no more code 13. My old sensor looked like it had some burnt white coating on it. Whatever it is, my guess is that it was fouled up by contaminants. Thank you CF!!

Thanks for letting me vent. This thing caused me worries about stalling out in the middle of nowhere, bad fuel mileage (8 mpg) and the skin on my knuckle. **** it!!! I'm gonna get the damn sledge hammer out now. More exercise!!!

I would still do a scan. You might want to figure out why it had white stuff on it before the new one gets it too stalling out in the middle of nowhere, bad fuel mileage (8 mpg) and the skin on your knuckle again.

Warm up, open loop mode idle: BLM = 128, TPS = 0.55 V, IAC = 60-120 steps.

Closed loop mode, idle = 400 to 600 mV, BLM = 138, TPS = 0.55 V, IAC = 50 steps.

Grandma acceleration to 0-72 mph: 550 to 650 mV, BLM = 118, TPS = 1.84 V.

Hard throttle (but not WOT) to 0-95 mph: 800 to 900 mV, BLM = 128, TPS = 3.85 V.

Sound normal???

You can ignore the open loop and full throttle readings. Data shows it's too lean at closed loop idle and your idle counts should be south of 25 (unless the a/c was on at which point the mixture would fatten up). Make sure Minimim Air is set to 425 - 450 rpms. I would get some data at a steady cruise - 1800 to 2200 rpms and I'd troubleshoot for the things that would trick the O2 into thinking that it was lean: a vacuum leak; air pump putting air to the headers after closed loop or a broken header check valve; an exhaust leak; a faulty MAF or plenum/intake leaks, coolant in the exhaust or water in the fuel. With a crispy O2 and the#'s you recorded, something else is probably going on.
