Default Mechanic Prices?

I have a 1996 LT4...Im just curious...I am probably going to install my cam and headers and all that jazz on my own. But how much would it cost if I did send it to a mechanic? I live in Atlanta, Ga.

headers/exhaust - about 6 hrs. labor time
cam - about 8-10 hrs.

X whatever local labor rate is + tax.

A Chicago shop charged me 1600 to do heads/cam and another 300 for headers/x pipe/ to Corsa, it needed to be customized a little.

shoot sami85l98 a pm. He lives and works in Atlanta and knows what local rates are. He has built motors, cam and head swaps, trans and rear work etc. Unfortunately, he knows too well what costs are at the local shops.

Yeah...Im taking with 16 hours work its going to be over $1000...might as well put it in the garage and pull the engine myself . I hate taking it down for weeks at a time. Time to prep the mean 190 hp Jeep for some usage.

The going shop rate around Atlanta is any where between $50.00 (if you know someone) to well over $100.00 at some dealerships.

The problem you are going to run into is with the headers, trying to find a shop that will install them may be a little tough.

What part of Atlanta are you from?

My shop is about 30-40 minutes south of the airport,
If you need any tech info or any thing you can PM me.

I live in Hiram, Ga...about 20 minutes west of Atlanta. I can do the headers on my own without a problem. I dont have to pull the engine for that. Its the cam that I dont want to mess with...but if I have to save $1000 to do it....Im yanking the sucker.

You don't have to yank the motor to do the H/C if you don't want. In fact, I think I'd leave it in there....

Well im not going to completely yank the motor...but forum members gave me the grand sport Hot Cam install instructions yesterday and all the stuff I have to take off the engine to change the cam....I might as well be yanking the engine.

Yep, pulling the motor to do the cam is like getting naked to change your socks.
you'll have to pull to cooling tower, so If you want to pay a mechanic something, pay him to evacuate the a/c system for you. It's easier to just pull the whole cooling package out at once then splitting the two halfes and pull the rad alone. But it too can be done. I beleive I had to just bump the fins with the cam pin on my Lt1 to get it out of the block.

Shop Key calls for 14.0 hours to do a cam change.
I do not think any shop is going to charge you less than that.

I would leave the engine in there for this myself, there is no reason to open up more than you have to.

I would listen to BTF, it is good advice.

If you want a loose quote on doing this, just shoot me a PM.

Ps i used to live near where you are now.

take a little drive out of the big city and things get cheaper. Im in atl, but im from montgomery and ive contacted a few shops there that do work for pretty cheap, course they are all people i know. but generally crap costs more in places like atl, especially buckhead and smyrna, than in a smaller town out of the way a little bit.

I hope it is allowed for me to post this.

I have not put my shops name or # here. If any one thinks this is against the rules, let me know and i will remove this.

We are at 68.5/hour ...

WOW that is a great price. In New England or here in the PNW you are looking at $85+.

We don't have as much overhead for heating cost here in Georgia.
