i backed my 86 into a boat trailer and put a hole in my rear urethane bumper. The hole is just below the license plate in that flat area. I pushed the urethane back into its place but of course it looks cracked. It looks like an easy fix but I'm not sure how to do it. Any suggestions?
It's still a major repair. There are urethane repair products that when used properly will fix the crack. Basically you'll have to sand the area down to the urethane, grind to bevel the crack, fill it with adhesive, let it harden, sand, fill, prime, sand, prime, seal and repaint the lower half of the bumper, at the very minimum. The other way is to replace the bumper but that is probably as much of a pain and probably a little more labor to do than repair the crack. Good luck.
The best way to fix a tear in the bumper is to first patch it on the back side. You need to sand or grind the surface to get good adhesion. You can use some fiberglass mesh or cloth with the urethane patch material. You can get the repair material at a body shop supply store. Many companies produce the two part repair material. Some require a special dual cartidge applicator gun. You can just get the repair material in squeeze tubes as well.
After the back side is strong you can then proceed to the face side and MrRenoman covered that procedure.
Find a good body shop, tell them you will remove the bumer and bring it it in. They will be able to repair the bumper, prime, and paint. A large shop could have some leftover paint and would be glad to sell you a small portion. If they have to buy a half pint or so, save the rest and use it for touch up.
A friend has a body shop and I see this done all the time. If you buy all the materials and do it yourself, you will have lots of stuff sitting around for 10 years. I think I still have a quart of activator for Dupont Imron from painting my wife's horse trailer, 14 years ago. See what I mean.
