Default More A4 ??

I have had problems shifting from 1st to 2nd, always had to let off the gas for the tranny to shift. This has been going on about a month, now today I lost 2nd through 4th. 1st and reverse are fine, a couple of shops that I called said they would have to crack open then tranny to diagnose and that will cost me anywhere from $100 - $150. So, I think it is the govenor; but would like to get a warm fuzzy before I go and spend money on something I do not need. I live in a apartment, so getting the car jacked up and getting under is a REAL pain. So PeteK or someone else chime in and tell me it is or is not the govenor. One guy I called could not remember if mine had one , so I am leary about trusting them. One said it could be my clutch pack, I think they are trying to take me for a ride.

TIA

It is likely a governor. Either the gear is torn up or the valve inside it is sticking. Pop off the cover and do a visual. This will confirm or eliminate it. Could be other things, but I will bet a shiny quarter it is the governor.

Ok, what does the color codes mean on the back of the govenor?
The one I am pulling out is green and white and the one I bought is green and red?

Pete, WHY did you not mention that the cover is a PITA to get back on??

I did not want to depress you. Colors vary. Not quite sure what color means what. The inner weights on a vette governor are smaller than the typical pass car governor. Be very careful putting cover on. You cannot hit it in the center. The endplay will be reduced or eliminated if you dent it. .050-.150 is typical end play.

OK, replaced the govenor, still won't go into 2nd. What else is left that I can check?

Not too much to check. If the tv is set correctly and the governor is working, a hung up valvein the valve body is the next possibility. The governor feed passage has a small screen. If it is blocked, the governor will not work properly.

Well a ton of fluid came out when I took the cap off, so I am thinking I am starting to get over my head. I know a shop locally, so I will take it there and have it rebuilt.
Pete, thanks for all your help.

Sorry that it didn't fix it. Based on the symptoms, it was classic governor issues. Obviously not though. Good luck

Ok, got my car back after 1600.00 for the rebuild and a rebuilt TC. Is this an alright price?

Car shifts great now, but does seem a little harsh going from 1st to 2nd.

For a stock rebuild, remanufactured torque converter and the labor to remove and replace. It sounds like a fair shake. Hopefully they gave you more than a 30 day warrantee and they changed out the sprags.

My A4 did the same thing 2 years ago. Went through the same symptoms and changed the governor etc. Ended up being that the tranny was toast. I'm glad those days are over with.. at least for now.
