Default ECU Swap

Hey Guys (and gals)! I have a question. I'm currently building a 406 for my 92, and I didn't really want to have to get an Accel DFI gen 7 because of the price alone. I was wondering if I could take the ECU out of a '91 and plug it into my harness, and then just get the chip reburned for the monster mouse. My thought process is such that the 406 will be similar to the L-98 because of the way they both work, and the reason why the stock '92 ECU can't be used is because of the Optispark (unless it can be programmed out of the ECU). Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!!!

Okay!!! That's friggin' AWESOME!!! I now have another question. What PROM has to be used? I have a line on a prom from an '89 out of an automatic (which I current have). Will that one work (I think probably not, but I'll ask anyway), or does it have to be '91 for a '91? Does anyone have AC Delco part numbers for reference? And also, who can program it for the monster mouse? Thanks again!!!

You are going to need to get shcematics for both the 91 & 92 wiring harnesses to make sure of the pinouts and where they go. While the 2 ECM's connectors are the same, the actual location of connections on the ECM and to the sensors are probably different and may require some repinning of the ECM end of the harness.
Also there are issues like the connectors for the TPS, IAC and possibly others....they are not the same connectors as the L98.

The Calpack from the 89 won't work at all. The 89 was a MAF system that used an ESC module mounted in the engine compartment and also used the 165 ECM. The 90-91 was a MAP based system that has the ESC as part of the calpack and used the 730 ECM.

The question is, why do you want to revert to the earlier ECM instead of the 92's PCM? The programming for the 92 isn't that much different from the 91 and I believe they used a removable calpack in that year still.

Also, if you do this. Your cars CCM may not be able to communicate with the earlier ECM. In this case you would loose the VATS system that controls the anti-theft because you would have to disable the VATs in the PROM code in order for the car to run.

My whole method of thought is that the '92 ECM would be out of the question all together because of the optispark. I was thinking that reverting back to an earlier ECM (complete package, not just the prom) would let me commumicate with a non-opti small block. If the opti system can be programmed out of the '92's ECM, that would make life even easier. As far as the schematics, does the Haynes manual have them? Also, the VATS doesn't really bother me. I have a few things in it to prefent people from stealing it. Besides, it's in my garage right now with a blown engine. I'm not too worried about someone stealing it. Really though, I'm open for any ideas/suggestions/thoughts. I'm sort of a newbie when it comes to this (ECU's and such). Thanks!

730 ecm and 727 are identical internals but 727 will fit under hood in place of 92 ecm, 730 is not hardened and must go inside cockpit somewhere (good luck)....727's are everywhere at j-y supply, get one with harness connectors for about $40 anywhere or i can let you have one at that + shipping if you're really tied up....i hate to hack up the stock harness from any vette
