Default Frisbee thing

What exactly is it? DO I need it? If not what do I gain by taking it off? How do I take it off?
Thanks

For 10HP gain vs a "possible" chance of early bracket fatigue, just do it.

When I replaced my water pump I used 4 bolts to hold the pulley instead of the stock studs (that also hold the "frisbee") and discarded the "frisbee". You can extract the studs from your stock water pump with vice-grips. I used lock-washers on the new bolts.

mine didn't have studs so i just took it off and replaced the bolts, as far as potential bracket failure there are some people here that have been running without them for some time with no ill side effects.
As for the 10hp it may be mental but i can surely feel a differance in acceleration and throttle responce

OK I just went out & looked at it....Its located under the tb duct correct? With the four bolts.... So I unbolt it & remove it all together? WHat happens to the slack in the belt etc? By the by I also found a broken line??? Its located under the alt on the driver side, its a metal line bolted the the frame (thin) then turns to a rubber hose & runs up front to a can looking thing in the front corner under my drivers head light. What the heck is this???
Thanks

ypu didn't remove the entire pulley did you? there should be no slack in the belt because it bolts to the pulley but doesn't do anything. Sounds like its a vacuum line for emissions i think, might want to get that fixed :D

That's right, remove the belt, remove the 4 bolts, remove the 'frisbee", replace the pulley and the belt.

That broken vac like could be causing false air, repair/replace it.

This is an interesting mod, but I have been reluctant to do it so far. Does anyone know when it was introduced? Does anyone know of "bracket" or other changes that were made at the same time. How about bracket problems on the earlier cars without it? I would feel a lot more comfortable with some of these answers. but that's just me :hat

Relax, you don't have one on an '86 as far as I know. I think they started using them in the later 80's. My 87 doesn't have one either, darn it!

This is an interesting subject, and I have been considering taking mine off also, just don't want to cause problems, so I have been a little reluctant to go ahead and do it. Z01, how did you arrive at the ten horsepower gain??
Is this a dyno number or just an estimate? Just wondering. BTW Z01, I am addressing this question to you because you appear to one of the more knowledgeable guys on this forum. I would be real interested in hearing some more of your thoughts on this subject. Thanks.

I believe when the Al heads went to D-port in '88 the AC compressor was moved to the left side along with other accessory location changes. I think this was when the brackets changed and is the 1st year of the "frisbee".

The 10hp number came from 1/4 mi time slips. With the "frisbee" removed trap speeds were consistently about 1mph greater, which is a 10 hp gain (these numbers are corrected for weather conditions as shown in my sig.). Though some aspects of the absolute HP calculation may be subject to debate, the relative gain is valid (trap speed is proportional to HP). When I saw the new trap speed increase I decided it was worth any potential risk.

Sorry, didn't have my first coffee yet; guess I'm still dislexic.

It went to the right side. I think I've seen the earlier L98s with it on the other side. Certainly the brackets looked different.

Mine came off yesterday. My mechanic doesn't understand why the thing was even there. LOL I saw it sitting there and told him there was a post about this. He's going to be joining us soon getting online.

I can't notice a difference.
