I replaced my wheel with an aftermarket/hub adapter--Installed nicely--but somehow I loosened up the headlight dimmer switch and lost my headlights all completely--Sooo, I had to remove the column again and dig down into the column to the dimmer swich area, I removed a clip that held down a compression spring, I have everything inorder to rebuild---BUT I cannot get this spring to compress, its like a 3 man job,
one to hold 2 objects over the inside wheel thingy, 2nd to use foot to push down on the 2objects to compress the darn thing and 3rd to slip that clip into position--I've tried for a couple hours and cannot get this right... This darn haynes manual does not give good directions, Does anyone have any tips for me..... My car is an 85
Go to Auto Zone and tell them you need the kit to install the steering wheel locking plate. With the kit you can install the locking plate in about 30 seconds, without the kit you'll never get the clip in place.
now I have a much bigger problem, I got the steering wheel on--But the headlights come when headlight switch is pulled and depends on the highbeam actuator, when pulling the highbeam--the lights will either come on or off. And now my car won't start, the starter just keeps turning. I don't know if I shorted out something or not--but I'm pretty sure I put the steering column EXACTLY how I took it apart. I checked all fuses--good, the starter just keeps turning and turning, I jump started it and left the car running hoping this would charge the vette battery--but same thing, won't fire up. Did I somehow short out a wire or interlink fuse? I Did not unhook the battery when I did the job, because I wanted to make sure as I'm going that the lights worked and horn worked--so I wouldn't have to start over....Looks like I perhaps screwed myself again...Any tips where to look, I at least want to get this thing fired up to run to town and have someone fix this light issue. I don't know if this has anything to do with starting, but my rpms would sometime go out and just show "0" like the wires were loose at the distributor
