ECM fuse keeps blowing??

Default ECM fuse keeps blowing??

I have an 86 that died and would not start so I went through the whole routine of checking fuel, spark, ignition module ect, then noticed I wasnt getting a SES light so I checked the ECM fuse and sure enough it was blown. After putting a new fuse in it started and ran fine for about five minutes the died. Blown fuse, now it blows them within seconds. IS this a bad ECM or what could be causing the fuse to blow? Thanks

More likely it is a shorted power wire. Disconnect the power wire at the ECM and put in another fuse. if it goes kapput then it is the wire, if not then ECM.

Hope you have BOTH FSMs, I think you're gonna be checking circuits for shorts.If you don't have the FSMs, you can buy them either at Helms, or on ebay, where I bought mine.

i dont know about an `86 but my `90 has two 12v and one ignition on, running to the ecm the manual shows which number they are at the ecm plugs. maybe you could put a meter on each one at a time and see what their doing. could be an ignition problem.

I was kind of thinking it was going to require a little time with the meter and manual. I was kinda hoping for one of those easy "I know what the problem is" type of answers every now and then I get those and saves lots of time. Thanks guys.

I'm going to take a wild guess here. It's hard to tell what the fused power wire that goes to the ECM toggles on the ECM output leads. I do know that there are several relays like the fuel pump relay, fan relay, etc. that rely on a either a 12 volt signal or ground from the ECM. I have seen many relays where the wiring has shrunk back from the connector exposing the various leads to each other. These exposed leads could be shorting together and may be a source of unexpected grounding or power to the ECM. This is just a wild guess. I don't have my FSM in front of me, but I thought I'd just throw this out there for thought...
