I posted a request for code 54 help a couple of weeks ago, but didn't get any answers. Of course it was 2AM when I did it. Or, maybe you guys knew but wanted me to figure it out for myself. Anyway the fuel pump relay cleared the 54, it now usually starts but only runs a couple of minutes or less, sets a code 42 (EST) and then dies. How do I go about checking the ignition module or ECM to determine which one is the culprit? Any other suggestions?

Silver it would help myself and other forum members....if on your sig...u have the yr model..and any mods..etc......since early C4 and late C4 have many different upgrades, nevertheless, was looking at your post....and had to check past post of yours just to try to get the yr model......sorry i cant help u...since i have the 94 model ....and my 42....on the pcm/ecm section deals with "Ignition Control Circuit" (shorted or grounded circuit), it might be the same on your yr..but different way to T/S, wires..etc....
Re: Fixed code 54, now I'm getting a 42......... (SilverC4)
After getting my '86 back from some recent engine work (incl distributor work), it was running fine, but didn't feel quite 100%. The Diacom I ordered came in, and I hooked it up. Every setting in Diacom looked OK, to me. But it said I had a code 24, and a code 42 (no SES light to alert me to trouble codes). The 42 refers to the ignition circuit.
Couple days later I was rerouting spark plug wires, and noticed the 3-wire connector that goes into the ignition module on the distributor was sitting crooked. I pushed it in tight. Presto - code 24 and 42 gone, and the car was running the 100% I thought it should.

Many people will not or cannot answer your Code questions unless you tell them what year the car is, and modifications, and if it is a stick or auto. In my posts I try to always include the year. Many answers come from owners who have the same year and have gone through similiar situations.
