Default Disable SIR

I'm going to replace my heater core within the next few days and have been told to disable the SIR system before I start. First off how exactly do I do that and is it necessary? Can I not just disconnet the battery and be ok that way? If I disable the system wrong can the airbag go off? Thanks!

Disconnecting the battery will keep the airbags from going off. But there is enough residual current left in the SIR system for about 5-10 minutes after disconnecting the battery. So it's a good idea to wait for awhile after pulling a battery cable. Grab a cup of coffee or a cold one and sit back for a bit

they are not that unstable...

unplug the fuse and the battery, thats double safety.

also, wash your hands before starting... less chance of a static discharge.

store them facing UP, that way, if for some reason it does pop, it will open, and not fly across the room!

just use common sense and you will be ok!

I was reading the Helm's manual before I disassembled my dash and got a kick out of their advise concerning the steering column. It said when you have removed it from the car be careful carrying it around in case you drop it and cause an accidental airbag deployment. Said it could take off like a rocket or something to that effect
