I have a slight problem with my 85 (auto trans). Sometimes it doesn't want to go into reverse unless you go to neutral first. Then other times, it goes straight into reverse like it's supposed to. It makes no difference whether you are on a grade or not.
We think it just needs an adjustment to the shift lever. My husband spent several hours adjusting it one way then the other. The only difference I ever noticed was the shifter was a little tighter. Other than that I didn't notice any difference. (Hubby wasn't too happy)
A few things you should know:
1. When shifting into all the other gears, it works fine. No problems. Drives great.
2. Tranny fluid is good and there is no burnt smell. No leaks.
3. Tranny is original. I have just under 95k miles on it. Bought it with 91k last August.
4. According to the book we have, there are only 3 steps to the whole adjustment process. We do not have any service manuals.
